so far i've polished my bg-42 camp knife to 600grt. but the buffing is taking forever to take out the scratches. should i polish to 1000grt before buffing, or is their a compound rougher than green(or in my case a compound similar, which is blue.) thanks in advance.

boy you have a lot of questions today...in my experience bg42 is not any tougher to finish that ats, so if i were you id make sure i was spending plenty of time belting with a dull220 and 400 so that all the deep scratches are out before you get to the finer grits.

Yeah, I agree with Tom, but the vanadium in BG-42 makes it a bit more difficult to sand out all the scratches. I often have to go up to a larger grit, worn belt to get what I want. For example, I use a worn 220 instead of a 400, then a fresher 400 in place of a worn one. Etc., etc.

As for the questions, keep them coming. It's the only way old f*rts like Tom and I get to show off.

My advice is that as long as you can see visible scratches and not just a haze, you should keep sanding. Actually, that's my advice at every grit. Any scratch from a previous grit will not buff out IMHO.

when i used to mirror polish blades...i found the film backed 15 micron belts from 3m were the VERY best for the last finish.. one thing that is very good about them is that the abrasive is super even and wears down very evenly....so you keep getting a finer and finer finish.....i usually kept a used one hanging on a nail and would finish with that before buffing, looking at the knife very very carefully when i finished belting it for any deep scratches...In my opinion, that is the only difficult part in a polished finish..making sure you get the deep scratches out before you progress to the finer and finer grits.....ending on the buffer....you should be able to polish the knife on a belt so that you dont have to buff that much for a perfect finish....the more you buff the more you start smearing the metal and it detracts from a perfect mirror reflection.
