Polishing BM Ti-Handles <HELP>

Hi all.., Pete Johnston from So California. I'm a long time Bali-Guy, a veteran reader of the Forums, but new to "Posting". I have a bunch of BM 42 models, and wanted to take a crack at buffing out the handles on one I have with a Ray Coons damascus blade (profiled by Pardy Bugtai). Ok...sooooo..., I'm guessing some of you are handy at this stuff, and I was hoping for a few tips on the best way to go about it. I have disassembled 6 or 7 of the 42's so I'm OK in that respect, but was wondering about "the process"???

I was thinking of approaching it by using something like white rouge on an 8" buffing wheel for the body of the handles and then doing the holes with my Dremmel buffing kit?? <rather than the 400, 800, 1000 grit approach> YUCK!!....I'm old :(

Any thoughts/suggestions, etc. would be appreciated greatly. I'm thinking some of you guys have probably taken a crack at this.., and I have seen one set of the Ti-Handles that looked very cool buffed out.

Anyway..., I'll try to contribute what I can in the future, although you guys are certainly in good hands "as is"....thanks!

Ya know, Ti just doesn't polish up very well. It ends up just a very smooth sort of dull grey/white.

Pete,

I polished the handles on one of my BM42's and they came out very nice and bright. It takes some effort, but a nice finish can be achieved.

BM's finishing process leaves quite a few scratches that must be removed by sanding. Start with 400, to 600, to 1200, 15U (micron) paper. Then take them to the buffing wheel with compound.

I think you will be pleased with the results.:D

Hey Chuck....John :) Thanks to both of you for responding. I have tried polishing a few Ti-Surfaced things in the past, and got about the result you mentioned Chuck..<majorly yucky>!!!

I was hoping you might respond John :p , and of course I'm gonna give it a shot <silly me>.., obviously I was hoping I didn't have to go the progressive route with the varying grits, but I do want to try it cause I've seen one that really turned out beautifully!! So what the heck? Maybe I'll at least contribute to "The Learning Curve".

Thanks again you guys...talk soon!!!

I just finished polishing up my 42 handles. I started with a 3M EXL wheel to take out the large scratches and then changed to a 6" wheel with some stainless polishing compound. It turned out great. I'm think if I wanted to take some more time and hand sand to around 800 or so I could get a mirror finish. Right now it looks almost like nickel plating.

My wedding band is made of 6/4 Ti with a polished finish and let me tell you that it does polish nicely. It may be hard to bring to a polish but it does polish very well. You can only tell a slight difference between my Titanium band and my Ladys' Platinum band.
