Shot a deer yesterday morning and got to try out my Cold Steel Master Hunter for the first time. I couldn't have been happier with the performance of the knife, which made quick work of the field dressing.

However, in my haste to get all my gear together and drag the deer back to the truck, I left a fair amount of blood on the knife. By the time I got home and rinsed it off, the knife had dark stains all over one side in particular. Now, I know that carbon steel is going to darken over time, but I felt badly about not taking better care of this blade. So I decided to polish it.

I put on a thin coat of Flitz and rubbed the stains. This technique faded them somewhat. Deciding to "kick it up a notch," I put on another coat of Flitz, broke out my Dremel and a polishing wheel. I used a low setting (5000 RPM) and gently buffed the blade in the direction of the grind (with the grain of the steel). The results were amazing. The stains went away, and the knife regained its original polished luster. Now I can sleep better at night. :D

Just thought I'd post it FWIW.

The Master Hunter is a great blade, isn't it? I too have noticed that the Carbon V stains easily, but I enjoy the look a well used blade takes on. Each 'stain' adds to the patina, IMHO, and carries a story.
