Polishing Engine Turning (Jewelling)?

Hi All,

Short - Can I polish light scratches out of a stainless steel scale with engine turning?

Long - I did my first engine turning yesterday and it turned out great. I was really happy with the outcome... then at the end of the day the scale got knocked to a concrete floor with metal dust on it and skidded a few feet. Taking the scale from something I was happy with to something I am mad at (I am sure many of you get this). So, I am wondering if there is anyway to polish out the floor scratches without ruining the engine turning, is there?
Note - this is just a personal knife, if it was for sale or a customer, I would 100% redo the engine turning.

Thanks in advance!

I suppose it really depends on how deep the engine turning is vs the scratches from the floor. I'd probably just try to redo the engine turning and just keep polishing until the scratches go away.

You can re-do the engine turning by hand usually to repair a spot. Sometimes you have to re-do most of the surface.

You answered you own question,
"If it was for a customer I'd redo the whole side"

One reason I generally don't recommend mirror polished blades and fancy finished like engine turning is that any rub on almost anything will mar it terribly. It sticks out like a sore thumb when someone looks at it. Hours to make and seconds to ruin just isn't a good plan to me. It only works well for a shelf queen or art knife that will stay in a box or display case.
