i recently acquired a mel pardue cqc7 auto (looks like an elarged benchmade 3500)with g-10 handles. the knife is beatiful overall but the g-10 handles are absolutely dull or flat finished. can i simply buff these up with a light rouge and get a sheen? or, is there more to it than that? i do not want to ruin the handle but think it would look sharper with a modest sheen. let me know how to properly shine these handles up...thanks...dmc (duane mccord)

This may not be the PROPPER way to buff them...but it will work without chance of damage: if you have acces to a buffer with a soft wheel spray WD-40 or Formula 2000 on the handles and LIGHTLY work them intothe wheel. A rough wheel to heavy a grit rouge has will actually cut into the G-10...

Duane, almost anything you do will take the G10 lower than the liners.

You might try using some 400 grit (real lightly) and then go to 600 grit. Then go to a cloth buff and rouge.

Of course, you will need to first remove the scales from the liners.

If your knife has bolsters, be very careful where the G10 and scales meet. You don't want to round off the G10. It will be very easy to do that.

Good luck,
A.T.

DMC,
First off, I really enjoyed getting to meet you in St. Charles this past weekend. On the G10 issue, I would contact the maker and see how much he would charge to polish it for you. It would avoid the risk of cutting the material down to or past the liners.

Talk to you later,
