Hi all , I have a Jess Horn with Micarta handles that have some dullness and light scratches in them , is it possible to buff this out with a spiral sewn wheel and a buffing compound ? Thanks , Dave

Posted this in the Spyderco forum then I saw this area and felt it was a better place.

Micarta should be sanded to 600 grit before polishing on a wheel. Use a 1750 RPM buffer. You might also try 0000 steel wool, then Simichrome, then paste wax.

Thanks for the reply Bill

Here is a copy of what I posted to a reply on the Spyderco forum. I'm open to any suggestions.

I bid on and won this knife ,it arrived yesterday and I was disappointed to see either shelf wear or marks from light carrying. My dilemma now is , do I send it back to the seller for a refund or attempt to sand /buff the handles?

Whadda you guys think ? Thanks , Dave

If you like the knife, keep it and see my post above.

In my brief experience polishing micarta it went really easily. I'd try by hand first unless you really need stock removal. A good polish with a fine compound will work wonders.

dullness and light scratches .

I think with just a few moments of work with some sanpaper, and then with a buffer , you can make your knife look Better than new!

For the light scratches on such black Micarta, I would use some of that fine-black wet/dry sandpaper.

A buffer would really help with the dullness after that. If you dont own a buffer, a drill with one of the buffers "chucked" into the end would be good enough.
