I was wondering, since im very new, I just got my first real knife, a kershaw blur, how do you clean up or polish the black blade. My blur has the black blade and black handle. Do you use a regular polish? Or just water? The guy at the knife store used what he called "graphite" on my friends leek to polish it up, but it was a silver blade.

Clean what ? sticky tape residue , gunk , muck , dirt , funk , filth , blood ?

I use de-natured alcohol to clean and then a CLP to clean/maintain.

^^ my bad, didn't see this section. Yea cleaning like dirt and fingerprints, polishing out scratches?

If you're using the knife, then who cares about some fingerprints or scratches. It gives your knife character.

If it's really bothering you though, I just use 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean gunk off the blade and then dry it thoroughly. Then apply some oil to protect, but with your coated Blur, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've had several "old timers" with considerable experience tell me that the black coating seriously compromises the blade's cutting ability. I've removed the black coating from my SRK, and it does seem to cut better.

What are the thoughts of the knifemakers/users here who have a great deal of experience with these coatings?

Most coatings are designed to remove friction, unless it coats the edge I don't see it hurting the blade much.

Epoxy coats can add friction to a cut. On the other hand, DLC coatings (TiCN, etc.) have a lubricating effect.

I was messing around and cutting a dr pepper can at my friends house, I pulled out my blade and there is now a lot of grey colored scratches on it, I dont really care, you can only see them in the light, not so much in regular conditions.
