polishing out some rust

Acquired a Boker stockman of sorts, has some fine rust on all the blades, not really badly. I was going to polish out the rust (&follow up on the bolsters and the springs) with compounds of succeeding fineness applied with my hands/fingers. How does one polish rust away when it's over an etched logo on the blade- or doesn't one?

-thanks.

Some scrubbing with fine steel wool (#0000) and WD-40 or mineral oil should work to remove the red rust. Assuming the logo is acid-etched on the blade (I think most are), this method shouldn't affect or damage it. Some polishing pastes using aluminum oxide abrasive, like Flitz or Simichrome, might work to lighten or eventually remove the etch, if the oxide is shallow. If it's fairly deep/dark, even these polishing pastes won't do much damage to it, if any. Just keep the scrubbing light; the red rust will come off pretty easily. Any pitting left behind would have to be sanded away, but I'm assuming you don't want to do that, if protecting the etched logo is important to you.
