Polishing question

I am a real noob here on the forum and don't know much, but have read a bunch of threads and I hear people talking about using a leather strap to polish a blade, is this true? Or maybe a different type of cloth?

To polish the edge, yes.

Buy a piece of leather, at least 5/6 oz that you can glue to a piece of 1x3" smooth side up - 12 - 18" long, dress it with neatsfoot oil and load it with green buffing compound. Stroke it till you can see yourself in the edge.
