Is a mirror polished blade more rust/stain resistant than say a satin finished blade? (on a non-stainless steel knife, that is!)

Results! Why, man,
I have gotten a lot of results.
I know several thousand
things that won't work.

A buffed blade has more corrosion resistance than one that's been hand-rubbed, because the buffer tends to smear over the crystalline structure, basically bending the crystals over onto themselves. An open structure, such as a hand rubbed finish is more vulnerable to corrosion. Bead blasting will have about the same affect as buffing, but slightly diminished.

Now, what other news did I have? Oh yes, IT'S A GIRL!!!

Pondering this I figured that buffing would surface harden the steel, from what you are saying about "smearing" the crystaline structure I may be right! Thanks Oz!

The technical literature talks about "corrosion sites" which are small pit marks in which the corrosive material is protected and thus has a chance to establish corrosion on the material.
It follows that mirror finished material has fewer protected places for corrosion to get started than does a satin finish.
