Hey all, Can't seem to get anything out of the search function so I'm just going to throw this out there and apologise if its been dealt with already: sharpening a SAK for a friend and the scales (red whatever plastic) are pretty scuffed up. Any way to get a bit of the polish back without too much work or rubbing the emblem off at the same time? TIA

If there aren't any sentimental values to the scales, they are very easy to replace and you can get them for 10.00 or so.

First, make sure your friend is okay with you doing that, some people get attached to the worn-in look.

You won't get any big scratches out, but you can get most of the finer ones using a fine paste polish (simichrome is my favorite, it works better than flitz on soft things like plexiglass and plastics). The emblem is a metal sticker thing yes?? just try to avoid hitting it when you polish, or maybe mask it off with tape and then cut the excess tape off, then polish to your hearts content. Hand polish only mind you, a buffer is just asking you to melt the plastic, it isn't much faster and you can get a more even finish by hand.

Thanks all for the quick replies. Yoda, I never thought of the sentimental value of the look of a well used knife, I'm glad you did. This is obviously a well used, older SAK and I will take your advice and leave it "antiqued". Thanks for pointing that out.
