When I first saw your title I laughed, because I coined a phrase a while back regarding projects I would be working on, when I set them aside to do something else, I would say they were being
Air Polished, which occurs as air flows across the object and that can take a good while to get a nice smooth finish.
So speed for the air polishing is determined by how wide the window is left open and the wind velocity outside....
sorry but I couldn't help myself, I'm sure a lot of folks here have projects set aside that are currently undergoing the Air Polishing stage right now.....
Buffing also has a major element in what compound you use, on wood and leather I use the 1200 grit white compound from Texas Knifemakers as it does a fine job. Just take extreme care as the wheel has a mind of it's own and can throw a blade pretty quick if you aren't careful!
