I am curious about the speed anyone uses for polishing blades, i have both 1725 rpm, 1/2hp, and 3450 rpm 1 hp. what do you use???

RPM doesn't make any difference the surface speed of the buff is what is measured(RPM X Buff diameter in ft.).
Critical buffing speed for steel is 5000 plus Feet per minute. Too slow and you get a hazy finish, there is no such thing as too fast. I often run at 10 000 feet per minute on large objects.

When I first saw your title I laughed, because I coined a phrase a while back regarding projects I would be working on, when I set them aside to do something else, I would say they were being Air Polished, which occurs as air flows across the object and that can take a good while to get a nice smooth finish.

So speed for the air polishing is determined by how wide the window is left open and the wind velocity outside....

sorry but I couldn't help myself, I'm sure a lot of folks here have projects set aside that are currently undergoing the Air Polishing stage right now.....

Buffing also has a major element in what compound you use, on wood and leather I use the 1200 grit white compound from Texas Knifemakers as it does a fine job. Just take extreme care as the wheel has a mind of it's own and can throw a blade pretty quick if you aren't careful!
