polishing the brass

I have a 2 dot 112 that has spent most of the last 37 years in a drawer. The brass (is that what it is?) could use a good polishing. Would I ruin the value if I did that?
 
If you intend keeping it then do what you feel it needs. If you intend to sell then let the buyer decide what he wants to do with his knife.

as a 110 collector, polished or not does not affect the value to me. Id like to know what a 40 year old patina is worth to a serious collector.

But I'd hold off on that polishing cause once its gone, its gone.
 
I have disdain for the 'patina look'. Makes it look like unpolished shoes at a dance. Polish it which will not affect it's value. Just it's look. DM
 
well I tink I will drops my two centiveos in on this one ...
if it is that gold looking aged look ( ya know looking like fine 4 year old wisky gold color - I leave it alone!!!
but on the other hand some times that old look is more like a dirty mirror
yet those get cleaned
some times it is right uneven or heaven for bid even green!
ye gads every one should polish the heck outa those !
my rule be that if it is right even and not dirty looking I leave it alone but
any thing less the that fine charcoal ageing gets cleaned up fer it goes in my cases
if it has any dents or deep cratches ... by all means clean it up !
or send it in to dat famous buck spa in I D HO were it comes out looking
all shiney and new!
 
Polish it,,,, Enjoy it,,, because all too soon it will tarnish again.
 
I say leave it alone. A knife with a 40 year old patina has a look that many people desire. I like my knives to have a nice thick patina on them.

A patina on a blade looks good. Patina on brass just looks dirty. I keep all my brass shiny ( liners & bolsters). The Army taught me me to shine brass, what can I say.
 
Sometimes you just have to. This is also a good example of why I try not to store the knife in the sheath. The acids in the leather will attack the brass in the long term.
