Polishing Titanium

I dropped my LCC on the pavement last week and put scratches on the bolsters. I've sanded them out and now am left with the task of trying to achieve an even finish to the bolsters. After sanding with 400 grit, I moved up to 2000 grit. The bolsters are very smooth but it appears that there are striations or machining marks in the metal and it doesn't appear that they will come out. Does titanium polish or am I stuck with F****ed up bolsters. Any suggestions?

kutch,
The key here is to remove all the tool marks with the 400 paper BEFORE you move on the finer grits. Myself, after the 400 I used some maroon scotchbrite pads the #0000 steel wool, which gave it shine, but still had the 400's paper finish. Gave the bolsters a nice brushed look that's easy to touch up in the event of another mishap. Check out some of the pics of mt LCC M/A to see what I mean.

I find that if you don't use a very sharp abrasive that you can get chip-welding happening. Basically Ti welds so easily that the friction causes the abrasive grit to be welded into the metal. To fix that sand it down by hand or use a sharper abrasive.
