Okay...as if my list of 'stuff I really oughta do' isn't long enough, I've decided to add sharpening and polishing the village khukuri to that list.

Sharpening is daunting enough (for someone who has yet to attempt a convex edge)...anyone know where to get a good strop and appropriate sharpening compounds (Tripoli, et al.)?

Polishing the deep grind and forging marks out of this villager is going to be the REAL task, however. Anyone able to provide a step-by-step rundown? I'm not looking for a perfect mirror finish (this puppy is a worker)...well, actually, I am: I want to keep my sirupati and any future khuks (

) polished perfectly, so I might as well practice on the ugly duckling.

Any and all help appreciated.

Mike, you may want to check out thispolishing tip thread from the archives. Although it won't give you the near mirror finish of a new khuk, it does a good job with scratches & I've been pleased with the results.

DMT makes a whole line of round and half round diamond hones, easy to carry and use.Spiderco has the same in ceramic. All work great you can order off the web.
You of course can use any buffing wheel and compond to bring up the shine.
I use news paper rolled up in a one inch tight roll, masking taped to hold closed, so I can cut them in 6" lengths.I use them with metal polishing creams ,OOOO steel wool sand paper, etc.I can put a good bit of presure on the blade with the end of the roll and take that all the way to the edge without shaving off my finger tips. When the end of the roll gets too dirty just cut a bit off and go on.This is the way I clean all blades, make sure the blade is down on a surface stout enough to handle the doward force you will apply.Give it a try.

"I leave my village khukuris ugly..."

Hey!

There's nothing ugly about my 2 village khuks. That isn't ugliness; that's charm!

(Talking of which; are there likely to be any more villagers coming in any time soon?)
