I'm getting a Polkowski/Kasper Companion (the fixed blade one) and I'd like to know which of the two blade style are recommended, the one with the serrationss or the plain edge?

it reall depeds on what YOU like. I prefer non serr for ease of resharpening...but carry a serr for edc at night for good shearing effect if need be.:p

depends on what your primary use is going to be.
if your going to carry it as a self-defense knife i say get the plain edge.
i have a polkowski mongoose w/plain edge and it's an awesome knife.:)

If you are cutting ropes all the time: serrated. If not, plain. My personal view is: A serration is well placed on the swedge or spine, like the Scorpion from MOD.

For defensive use, serrated can help slash through fabric, while the rest of the blade doe's it's work in the balance of the move.

Thanks for the replies... but how effective are the serrations on the P/K Companion? is there such as thing as a "ineffective" serration pattern?

Do you mean, if there are knives with serrations out of the box, that are not worth the name?

Yes, there are.

Ok. And what about the serrations on the Companion? Worth considering or should I stick to the plain edge for SD?

i dont like serrations on CRKT knives, like them on some, ie spydie police seems better to me w/the full SE, but the CRKT's i have seen w/serrated edges were not to my liking, not at all like spyderco/etc. I would rather have the PE myself.

i have a PE CRKT polkawski and do like it, the std sheaths suck though, imho, but ya can get a good one for $25 or so, so no real biggie.

imho its a lot of knife for the $$, lately have been carrying the CRKT when biking, rather than my nealy pesh kabz, for what its worth.

If you get it from MIke Sastre at River City Sheaths, you get the whole package in addition to one of MIke's excellent sheaths that makes all the difference in this knife.
