Im about to order one of these knives. However I looked in the Archives and saw there were a few opinions about the sheath(s) they give to you. Any opinions? If I order and it ends up being REALLY bad, where are some good places for Custum (Tactical) sheaths?

Thanks. -Hunter

If you're looking for Kydex, ask Normark (he's on BFC) to make a sheath for you.
Here's his site.

Whats BFC? I REALLY like those sheaths. Sold! 1 more question: Whats bead blast like? is it rough? cheap lookin? Harder to sharpen? does it feel good to the touch? Ok thanks for puttin up with all my newbie questions guys, Im still gettin into the knife world. :)

BFC - Bladeforums.com

I was just looking over his site again. I like the new Micra sheaths and the one for the Big Spender.

Bead blast is just a finish on the blade that makes it non-reflective. The coating will not have an effect on sharpening (doesn't on my blades anwyway).

It's coarse to touch as opposed to the smoothness of a polished blade.

Hey Guys...

Thanks Bok...

Dear Fireshaker,

Good purchase there. I recently bought a CRKT PK companion myself, with a plain edge....of course.....what a fantastic knife!!!! Light, slender, sturdy and very sharp. I real fighting knife designed by Bob Kasper and Al Polkowski. Bob Kasper is a martial Arts expert and Al is a specialist fixed blade custom knife maker. They collaborated with CRKT to make an affordable knife with a sound design. They succeeded!!!!! Bead blasted means that the "shine" has been taken off..for tactical reasons.....it feels soft like silk when you rub it....it's beautiful!!!!! Be sure to keep lots of Band Aids with you...LOL.

The sheaths....well...yes...you do get two..I have not used the multi-purpose one yet...I haven't had the need. The one that fits inside your trousers and clips on the belt carries well.....very comfy really, but it's a son-of-a-gun to pull the knife and replace it with relative ease. It will not fall out by itself that's for sure, and the whole system was so reasonably priced. I paid the equivalent of about US$40. It's practically for nothing, so I am not complaining about the sheaths. I am going to get a custom one made though as the original equipment are flawed!!!! But don't let that detract from a really great knife at a superb price....as they say, it's the best bang for your buck kind of knife.

Well Thank ya guys! I will probably be gettin that custum sheath as well though. Thanks for the opinions as usuall! *checks mail*

As BOK already stated, a bead-blast finish makes a blade non-reflective. The one done by CRKT is pretty good. Bead-blast finished knives are looking good IMO, but there is a major drawback: it makes the steel more vulnerable to corrosion. I already had a (minor) rust problem with a CRKT M16-03Z, an otherwise fine and inexpensive knife. It is AUS-6 (which is very corrosion-resistant) and it rusted fairly easy although I used Tuf-Cloth. Maybe I´m sweating too much.

Will a beadblast finish rust if you dont have it exposed to water?

I live in GA, its very humid...maybe I should whipe hte blade down after i carry it?

Just keep an eye out for rust spots and you'll be fine.
I've got the CRKT Crawford/Kasper (bead blasted blade) to camping. It was very humid (rained like it never rained before) and it started to have rust spots.

The pores on the bead blast will trap the moisture and will cause minute, rust spots.

I use Flitz on mine at first sign of any kind of rust or corrosion.

It would be a good idea to wipe it down after use.

I just got a Marine version of Tuff Cloth from Sentry, as I live by the beach. This should help big time, along with occasional Flitzing of the blade. You'll be alright.

I personally did not like the sheaths that came with the Polkowski Kasper fixed blade. Sort of the way the plastic "felt" and it's finish and certain visual characteristics, besides that it sometimes held the knife a little too fast. (as regards checking out this knife in the store. Don't own one.)

Go to some of the sheath makers sites. One is River City Sheaths. You can see various sheaths; maybe call the people and get their thoughts and advice. Think about where you'd like the sheath to be for comfortable carry and also think about whether you want it exposed or not.

It's a nice knife - putting it together with a well-made sheath and you won't be any worse for $$-wear. Expect a sheath to cost equal to or a little less than the CRKT P/K knife itself. You'll be both "styling" and also enjoying a well made sheath and well-done draws from it.

ONE more question, sorry to drag this out, but I wanna be sure, I've never owned a bead blasted knife. What exactly is Flitz and can I get it at wall world? (lol) I think Im goign with this knife purchase, I dont exactly want the Desperado any longer due to the 420 steel, and the grip...Im just not into that egg thing anymore...looks like it would be uncomfortable against me as I sit down or such. Thanks for the comments guys!

Flitz is simply a metal polish that removes oxides and such. I can find ti in half a dozen stores in my little city, so you should be able to find some where you are at. Simichrome is another good one. With these polsihes, all you do is squeeze a bit on the knife, I usually rub it down with my fingers, and wipe off. I use flitz and it works great.

Flitz usually would remove light rust with hand rubbing. If you need a bit more power than that, use some fine steel wool and you should be done in no time.
Oh I do have the sheath for the Companion from Normark, it's excellent, he gave me two belt loops, one multi position and the other is a horizontal. They could be mounted on either side. If you want IWB he can probably think of something. The molding is excellent.

Hey calyth...

Thanks for the kind words....

Calyth..

Just so you know..
The multi postition clip that is on your sheath will do IWB...

Not sure if you know how to use it in that fashion..

Any questions,,drop me a note..

My Companion rusts very easily because I wear it IWB and sweat sticks to the little places between the scales and the blade. But I removed the scales, and sanded the whole flat part of the blade (which extends quite a bit out towards the tip. So now I blade that's polished except on the bevels. I think the contrast looks pretty funky, but some people say it's darn ugly.

This has pretty much stopped the rusting of the parts near the scales.

FWIW i got a CRKT companion and liked it so much i got a genuine polkawski, but the sheaths that come w/the CRKT are'nt very good imho, i got one from normark and it is 200% better than either one.

also, have never had any rust/corrosion probs w/the CRKT, and i usually wear it when biking, so it gets sweaty for sure, i spray it off in the sink and shoot some WD40 on it , no probs!! an excellent knife for the $$, kinda heavy though......

Oh thanks guys for your opinions, I most definatly gettin the Companion, I found it for 30$ on Smokey Mountain Knife Works!

My next knife purchase will most definatly be the Cold Steel Desperado though...Unless I find another knife like the companion. ;)

calyth - you don't have a pic of that sheath you could post or send to me do you? I'd like to get that same sheath but there's no pic of it on Eric's site.
