There is no doubt that the BF community includes knife lovers from every generation. Those that have a lifetime of experience and those that have just discovered traditional pocket knives. Like Ford and Chevy, we don't always see eye to eye on things. But, as someone who genuinely likes to know what peers actually think, I want to take a poll. Like politics, many times we only see the opinions of the few and the silent majority stay silent.

Thus, here are a couple of links to a poll (free site) that I set up to discover a genuine headcount. I am not publicizing this poll anywhere but right here, as there are obviously some places on social media more loyal to one or the other. I am not rallying any troops to any one answer. I ask the same of each participant.

Please don't comment with anything that could be construed as a preference or perceptions in this thread, just to keep it non-political.

Best Current Overall Traditional ==> Overall Poll

Best Current Work Traditional ==> Work knife Poll

PLEASE TAKE A FEW SECONDS TO CAST YOUR LOT. IT IS THE SILENT MAJORITY AS WELL AS THE FREQUENT POSTERS I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM.

Disclaimer: I thought BF had a poll type post, but can't see it. Also, I see nothing against the rules on posting an offsite poll, but have been wrong before. If wrong this time it is not intentional. I understand it is not fair to many other makers to leave them off. Fact is, these are the ones that typically come up in conversations here. I think there are companies that make better knives that all three; but they are not topic of typical conversation.

Several comments:

1. Yes, there is a Poll option in BF. When you create a new thread, scroll down to the bottom and choose "Make a Poll" and fill in the options.

2. I have no idea what is "best". Unless there are a set of weighted, measurable criteria, then best is at most subjective and may very well be situational. Best for apple slicing and best for skinning a deer are likely different.

3. I don't need or use a knife as a work tool and would not select a slipjoint folder if I did. Also, again, subjective and situational depending on whether a person works as a chef, a carpenter, a surgeon, a lawyer, a mechanic, a waiter, or a business executive.

So I can't answer your polls as asked.

I have knives from all three brands, and others. I most often choose to carry a Case knife. GEC or Queen may in fact be "better" using various metrics, but I like the overall package of a Case knife. The very things I like about them (easy to sharpen steels, thin hollow grinds, stainless steel) may be the things that someone else thinks are flaws.

When I have "work-like" things to do where I think I might need a pocket knife, which would be home improvement things, I carry a SAK Farmer and a modern folder. You left Victorinox off your polls.

Yeah - I forgot that intro paragraph. What part of the knife community hates this forum? Dealers, manufacturers, makers? Is there some other place where people come together to discuss knives on-line that I don't know about? Perhaps I'd like to join there, too.

I clicked on both your polls Mike. Full of advertising not related to knives at all and yes, there were choices but I just didn't need to do a background check on myself as offered by your poll. Dump this poll and put up a BF style poll with no advertising.

I should have clarified a bit to state that I have no interest in writing a long document on exactly what function we are talking about performing. As if we did that correctly we could just have a scientist some where tell us which is best and the opinion of others would be useless. I am looking for general perceptions from those that use knives and understand their own expectations - in general - of them. If your main use of a knife is spreading jelly, then answer for that perception. If it is skinning a squirrel, answer for that. If it is cutting sheetrock, answer for that.

I knew I saw a poll option somewhere. But in hindsight I like this other one better as it shows locale and has security benefits.

See, I can't see any of that when I click the link. Maybe my script-blockers are taking care of it.

Plus, if a commercial establishment wants my opinion, it should offer an incentive.

Read thru the GB&U; there are people that show up all the time and proclaim their content. But, not pertinent, so I removed it.

I don't see a problem with your poll, Mike. I took it.

Your option to set up a poll in BF shows up near the bottom of the page, when you start a new thread. If it's not available to you, I'm not sure what might be going on.

Let's leave the like/dislike BF stuff out of here.

Ask any mod. We get an earful from folks who don't like BF or the way it is moderated.
