OK, so the HI site is actually completely loaded up at three different free servers (other than AOL). Which one seems to work best for everyone?

[1]http://khukuri.theshoppe.com/ - banner ads, but no pop-ups, very fast loading on my computer

[2]http://khukuri.netfirms.com - banner ads AND pop-ups, very fast loading on my computer

[3]http://www.stormpages.com/khukuri/ - banner ads, but no pop-ups, semi-fast loading on my computer

compare these versus the old slow AOL site - they take between 5-15seconds versus about 2minutes on AOL!!!!:

old AOL site=http://members.aol.com/himimp/

Do let me know what you think.

cheers for now, Ben.

The Shoppe loaded the quickest in IE6, without cookies.
Netfirms wanted to set a cookie and loaded ok.
Stormpages was slow, too slow.
Shame about the banner. Can you place the banner elsewhere? Like way at the bottom where your not smacked with it as soon as you open the page.

the shoppe is my top pick. I can't do anything with the banners - that doesn't have to do with the HTML code or anything. For $5/month, I think, one can make them vanish. Might be worth it, I dunno - I think any of the three that I found (maybe they're other ones out there, but theshoppe (which is part of bizhosting) & netfirms seem quite good & both have 'premium' options with no banners) are about 100x better than AOL, just in terms of loading speed alone. Plus they all have much more available space.

pretty easy to set-up a redirect page at the old address so everyone makes it to the new site (can have it forward people automatically even) and move into a nice new home with a better name like khukuri.theshoppe.com.

cheers again, B.

Glad too see you got your smoke on the other thread.:)
And you're exactly correct in what you believe about smoking or not.

Ben all of these worked about equally in loading time. I hate popups, especially when they follow you to your next page.
I have to give a slight edge to #-1.

I had to go back to the other thread to load the AOL H.I.Website as this one was just bringing up a blank page for me.
It is much slower than any of these.

Both #1 and #3 loaded fast for me. #1 might have been a little bit faster so that one gets my vote. Great job by the way!

Ben,

#1 loaded the fastest, with 2 and 3 coming in real closely. I didn't empty my cache before each try, so maybe 2 and 3 loaded up quickly because the images were in the cache...??

I couldn't even get the AOL version to load. ... or more correctly, I didn't want to wait that long for it to load :)

I'd love to do some flash animation for the site, but I just don't have the time to concentrate on it. If some time does open up, I'll try an experiement and let you take a peek :)

What bugs(not the term I'd really like to use!) me is the free sites work better than the giant who is charging me money.

There's something wrong with this picture -- especially the pix that AOL tries to put up.

Number 3 loaded the fastest on the computer I was using, so it gets my vote. All three of the new websites are lookin' good though.

Bob

Ben:

I got the fastest load time on #1. In the order of 4 to 5 seconds using a DSL connection.

Not too shabby!

Ben,

#1 loaded fastest, and looks the best IMO. #2 was fast too, but had banners or whatever they're called. I think the site looks best overall on #1.

Excellent work!!!:D

How long will it be before this site goes under?

I'm very wary of sites disappearing. They just go away and take everything with them.

Well, one of the things I like about the hoster of http://khukuri.theshoppe.com is that it's actually BizHosting.com - which I believe is a fairly well-known and respected company. Quote from their site: "Bizhosting is the property of About Web Services, a division of About, Inc. that specializes in high-end Web hosting and commerce solutions. According to January 2001 data, Media Metrix ranks About.com as the 6th largest Web property."

their main-page is here: http://www.bizhosting.com

Oh, one thing I should mention is that domain name registration and web-page hosting are two separate things- a lot of places bundle them together--though typically the hoster is just partnered with a domain name registrar--but one could host a web page one place, at bizhosting.com, and register a domain name somewhere else. The top recommended place for just domain name registration seems to be:

http://www.inww.com

actually an australian-based company, but they register normal .coms, for US$35/year (US$70/2 years, &c.).

Bizrate will take the banners off (khukuri.theshoppe.com) for US$5/month.

Thanks for more excellent help, Beo.

Did I mention that a little surprise is headed your way?

At HI & BirGorkha we won't allow folks to work for nothing.

Many thanks Uncle Bill - I always enjoy surprises! I do appreciate it. I did also just want to be of help to you too; I want to see HI do well, like everyone here.

Here's my (final?) advice after some more research about webhosting/domains/&c.:

if you just want a free provider, I'd go with Bizhosting (khukuri.theshoppe.com).

If you want a banner-free host, then I'd actually choose Netfirms (khukuri.netfirms.com) [they've been providing space since 1998, pretty long in 'computer-years', so I think they're pretty stable--well rated too, indepedently]:

Here are their plans compared:

FREE
-------------
ADVERTS

25MG space

1GIG bandwith
(=200,000 hits/month)

US$5/month
--------------
NO ADVERTS

50MG space

2GIG bandwith
(400,000 hits/mn)

US$10/month
--------------
NO ADVERTS

100MG space

4GIG bandwith
(800,000 hits/mnth)

all of these plans (& both of the Bizhosting plans) also include an email account

My overall recommendation is:
1. choose the Netfirms US$5/month plan
2. keep AOL for 3-6 months for overlap
3. don't bother with registering for a specific domain name

The reason I say don't bother with domainname registration is that I'm not convinced that www.hi-khukuri.com (or whatever) will really bring in more hits than say khukuri.netfirms.com.

But if you do want a specific domain name like www.hi-khukuri.com, I'd still choose the Netfirms $5/month plan and then sign up with Internet Names International for your domain name-provider at US$35/year (this is if you want something like www.hi-khukuri.com as your address).

So you're either looking at US$60/year for khukuri.netfirms.com with no banner ads

OR

US$95/year for www.hi-khukuri.com (or whatever other available name we can find) with no banner ads

I didn't realise that it'ld be so cheap! Either option is less than the cost of an HI BAS!! ;)

You're paying AOL US$120/year for the slow-as-treacle-in-february, 2MG storage account right now, when you could have your own domain for less money....remember when SkakSig was asking me why I didn't like AOL???? Now you know.....

The last thing is: who is providing your internet service? I mean, who do you pay so that you can connect into the Internet? If it's AOL, then you either stick with them or sign up with someone else.

hope this is helpful...

cheers, B.

Call GBIS in the Reno phone book and get their rates or go in and talk to them at 50 Washington St. Think that's in the grid between Arlington and Virginia Streets on east and west and between the Truckee river and California Streets on north and south.

Their cost is $21.95 monthly or $219.50 a year for basic coverage. I don't know how much webspace is included.
