Thanks for settng this poll up, Gsonnen.

I haven't voted (yet) because I'm here in part to try to evaluate that very question before I buy my first 'hawk.

I'm reading some very interesting threads about this very question.
Here's one of several I found, even though there are relatively few posts in it.

I see that there have been four votes so far, and hammers are coming out on top 3:1.

I'd like to encourage voters to PLEASE offer some opinions here about WHY you voted the way you did. Telling me that a hammer or spike is better without telling me why you believe that isn't going to help me make a decision about which is best for my particular needs.

Thanks,

Nem

I have never used a Tomahawk without a spike, but the one I do have- (a Swamp Rat Crash Axe) when I wanted to smack something without cutting or puncturing it, I whacked it with the flat and that seemed to work fine. Might not be the best for dedicated hammering, but one could easily drive tent stakes with it. Spike sticks well when throwing too. I am not going to vote on the poll since I haven't much experience with the hammer hawks.

given two identical hawks - but one has a spike, the other a hammer poll, I take the spike. I prefer the weapon aspect as opposed to the utility of a hammer poll. If I need to hammer something I would use a hammer, rock, baton stick etc. Often a one piece steel tactical tomahawk will have a flat on the head which would work somewhat.

I'd rather have the hammer poll. I don't find myself in many situations where I need to punch someone's skull in neatly. If I did, I'd rather have something with a little more stand-off range. Like a .308. I've used the hammer poll on my tomahawk mostly for smacking in loose staples while inspecting fencelines on our property. A hawk works great for that job. The blade is good for clearing away unwanted tree limbs, and the hammer can be used to smack posts around or adjust staples.

At the moment, I resonate most with 1.

For some reason,
I think 'hawks evolved more as weapons
than as tools to "adjust staples" on fence posts.

Just thinking out loud here.
No truth implied.

l like both, but l've found the spike useful for chipping ice and other uses such as puncturing cans.

I used to prefer spikes till I read about a guy who was training for crowd control was almost stabbed by his own spike. I realized then that with a spike hawk there is always an edged weapon pointing in your direction if you are struggling with a physically stronger opponent that could be very bad.
