Polymer or plastic knives

I'm looking for a polymer knife that would be useful for opening packages, cutting a bagel and spreading a little cream cheese, stuff like that. I'm tired of having my knives taken away on museum trips.

Any suggestions?

I would like it to be sharp enough to cut a bagel. A serrated blade is fine. I don't think the CIA letter opener would be useful for this.

Thank you for any suggestions.

EtA: Or would it be better to knap one out of obsidian and leather-wrap it to a wooden handle?

That one's less than fifty bucks!

You're having knives confiscated at museums? That's insane. What possible reason could there be for not allowing a small pocket knife into a museum?

Cold Steel makes some polymer knives, though I don't think any of them are serrated. Alternately, you could just pack a disposable plastic knife (standard plastic cutlery) whenever you pack food and might need it.

I lost two this week.

Maybe they thought I was going to hold the triceratops skull hostage until I was provided with a set of expanding sponge dinosaur capsules.

It was absolutely pathetic. I had a container of cream cheese and a bagel, two cups of yogurt, and a sammich. One knife for the bagels and cream cheese, two spoons for the yogurt. One for my old lady, one for me.

They didn't want the spoons, though. I could keep the spoons.

Meh. Total crap.

George Washington would not be disarmed, going into a museum with a piece of bread and cheese.

In the defense of certain museum personnel, I let my bag be searched by many security guards, almost all of whom let it slide. If you go to the Air and Space museum in DC, make sure your knives are plastic.

If I can pick up a serrated polymer knife somewhere I'm going to do it. That would be sufficient for my needs.

I've seen several museums posted for no knives.

I think you might be able to do something with the Cold Steel nightshade series.

How about one of those Darrel Ralph designed carbon fiber daggers? I forget who makes em tho.

Probably Wilson. I don't think a place that bans pocket knives would be happy to see a dagger, though. :)

The other day I was at my local grocery store and I saw a plastic 'bagel knife' for sale. It had fine serrations that looked like they might work. It was only like $5 but I didn't buy one.

Also there is the plastic-bladed Myerco folder designed by Blackie Collins. I bought one for like 10 bucks at a gun show a few years back. The guy at the gun show had some of them with the blades stuck into a pine block, which impressed me. I have barely used it, however, so I can't comment on its usefulness.

Here is a link to a picture of one: (note--I don't know anything about this vendor, it just happened to be the first pic of the knife that I found via google).

The knife is assisted, but the spring is made of beryllium, which doesn't register on metal detectors, from what I am told.

Tom Krein makes an all G-10 knives. That ought to take care of business for ya. But, if a place is taking your knives, I dunno if this will make a difference or not.

Museums just don't ramdomly pop into your path and suck you in. If your knife is being confiscated, that is your fault for trying to carry it into a restricted place.

A plastic knife for cutting a bagel and spreading a little cream cheese, you can purchase a box of fifty such knives at your grocery store for a few bucks. They're in the picnic supplies section with the paper plates and plastic cups.

I agree with Gollnick! That would be your best bet.

Disposable plastic silverware really sux. Bends and breaks. Go into any place that sells camping gear and you can get much better plastic silverware. Of course you'll have to wash it....

Before you head out to the museum, when you are at home making your sammich, cut your bagel and slap the cream cheese on, wrap in plastic wrap. Problem solved. :D

I'm thinking that if the knife gestapo at the museum won't allow a knife in, they will probably take any decent plastic, stone, or wooden knife from you as well.
