I am currently in the market and was wondering what the general consensus was for the slide material- stainless or black? I think stainless is great for a marine envirnment but wanted others opinions. thanks in advance for any feedback.

you might consider a glock, the slide is finished in something called tenifer and it seems to hold up quite well.

The new coating s on guns like the Glock are amazingly corrosion resistant ! But 'black' finish is rather nebulous. There are many 'black ' finishes ,make sure you know which it is.

I've wanted a 1911 for a long time.

When it finally happens I'll likely get a stainless frame with "black" slide. (like mete said, there's a bunch of "black" finishes....hmm, can Walter Birdsong put his Black-T on a stainless slide?)

Anyways, I think this is the best of everything IMO.

Looks great. You don't have a shiny slide glaring everywhere. (if you're into uber-tactical kung fu death ninja-stealth) Your hand comes in contact with the stainless more (Good for me, I apparently have a pretty "corrosive" chemistry) and the slide is the easiest/quickest part to do maintenance on anyways.

Personally I like the color of the slide to match the frame but it really does not matter as it is personal preference.

Remember, if you get one of those polymer guns don't let your dog near it if he likes to chew on things. My wife left her Glock on the couch for 15 minutes while she did some laundry, and the dog chewed it up pretty good. I know its hard to believe, but yes he did chew it up...

Pick what you like, not what others like....only way to be happy. I have guns with all manners of finishes and like them all. I will say that if I did have a finish applied to a gun like I did with the 38 Super I built myself, I would have the Robar NP3 finished used on it. This is one of the slickest finishes I have found, after having it applied to my Super frame I had to up the recoil spring by 4 pounds. This was an unfinished steel frame so I had apply a finish of some type to it and had heard good thing about the NP3.

The dog was just being more vigilant than your wife and enforcing the basic rules of safe gun handling one of which is that, when not in use, all guns and all ammunition should be stored in a safe way. The dog saw the dangerous gun just carelessly left on the couch and took immediate action to render the gun permanently safe. Good Dog! Now give him a treat.

Keep in mind that black-coated finishes tend to show minor scratches and wear more than silver finishes.

:D

I will tell her that, it will make me chuckle... of course I will probably need to sleep on someone's couch for a while...
