would this be a good or a bad idea? I know it's protective but I'm wondering if it'll make it more slippery talking about everything from axe handles to a Bo Staff just curious in general

Its slippery forsure but you could add some abrasives like sand etc for grip

I personally wouldn't polyurethane an axe handle.
Hafts are easy enough to take care of- just slather them in Boiled Linseed Oil once a year or so.

Poly is some good stuff, but it's not going to save your axe handle from overstrikes or hitting errant branches and knots and the like.

I had a yard sale axe that had poly or lacquer or some other clear glossy finish on it. It was very grippy to my thin nitrile coated gloves. I liked it. It looked good and was well protected. I may experiment with that again.
