This is a re-handle job I did recently. Forged from w1 round bar. Probably the last time I will use micarta for a guard.

What do you guys think of the pomelle sapele? I've got a few blocks of it, I really like it and will probably use it again, just wondered what everyone's opinion was...

That is one slick little knife Matt. The wood looks real nice too.

I like the flatish look of the handle. Very cumfy looking for sure.

Thank you very much guys. The pomelle sapele looks like quilted mahagony, to me at least. It's pretty nice to work, a little harder than claro walnut. It actually smells good too :), almost like cedar...almost ;)

Has the sapele been stabilized? We have some pommelle sapele waiting to be cut up and I'm wondering how it will react to stabilization. Its definately gorgeous wood :)

No, none of the blocks of pomelle I have are stablized. The wood absorbed tung oil nicely, I assume it would do just as well during stabilizing... If it helps, I think the wood is similar to mahagony in weight and density, but I have no idea how well mahagony stabilizes ;) :).

We have some stabilized santos mahogany that stabilized very well. With some woods, stabilization brings out even more of the figure. My guess with stabilizing the sapele is that it will get a bit darker. We are trying to get another batch of wood sent in for stabilization before Christmas. The sapele may make it into that batch. I will report back on how it reacts if we do send it in. :)

I like the micarta guard...it looks like that was canvas micarta, paper micarta might get you a nicer finish with less white lines. It polishes up pretty nice too.
