Anyone ever remove the pommel from one of their Buck fixed blades?

I'm thinking about doing some custom handles on a 103 and I'm curious as to how to remove the pommel with the least damage.

Any thoughts?

Not a really easy task.

By pommel are you wanting to just take the black phenolic handle off and leave the guard and butt in place or are you wanting to take off guard, handle and Butt leaving only the rat-tail blade?

To remove just the handle grab a hammer and shatter off the handle. If it is too easy I will be disappointed cause it was designed to take abuse...

To remove the butt, there is an rivet through a hole in the rat tail tang that affixes the butt in place. You have to hammer/punch that rivet out and then with a rubber mallet you can remove the glued butt without deforming it too much.

To remove the guard you have to be very careful if you want to reuse it cause it will deform pretty easily and has glue between the micarta insets and the aluminum rings.

I removed the handle from a skinner and replaced it with elk. Cj is right in that you have to pop out the pin in the pommel I had to wiggle the pommel cap until it came off with no damage. I took a hammer to remove the phenolic handles. I didn't remove the guard. Take your time, it's fairly easy to do.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the quick response.

I'm planning on just removing the butt and going with a green linen micarta handle.

Looking forward to this project :)
