Guides when stringing up a hooch or using it as a rain fly. Moose

thanks but i dont get it. i tried looking at it for shelter but doesnt seem optimal at all other ways yes it looks good

The tabs and loops were originally designed to work with the "ponch liner" as a method of keeping the center of the blanket from shifting and walking. I have never use a liner and a poncho together. I use mine as a hooch or a rainfly for my hammock. I like to run my apex cord through the loops so if the wind kicks up, it gives it a little more strength. Some folks just throw it over the top and guide it down, and that's perfectly fine too. It also helps it stay on the line if you untie it and let it hang, say while you're sitting in your hammock eating, or flip the hooch open for some sun. I hope this helps. Moose

The tabs are meant to run cord thru so that you can tighten the poncho around your waist/chest and your upper body will stay drier when the wind is blowing or you are moving about with a pack on.

Good point, I don't usually think about wearing it:eek::D. Moose

Tying it around your waist also help you see where you are stepping in uneven and rough terrain.

Think of an apron, when you bend/lean over, poncho won't billow out.
Otherwise you're holding poncho out of way with your hands.
Some folks had poncho for years and didn't know what tabs were for.
My old USGI rubber poncho has a channel to run cord through.
My 1977 FM 21-15 doesn't tell you about the tie strap, even though it's shown in pictures.

Here's a picture from 1966 FM 21-15 manual, on hardscrabblefarm's site:

They have some neat info for older web gear.
