I am 51 and have been fishing since I was 6, but the last few years all the lakes I fish on Long Island NY turn green and get covered with plants and lake weeds. This never happened before in all my years of fishing. The lakes get bad faster each year. The water becomes green soup in many of them, making fishing nearly impossible! Any idea why? Does this happen where you live? I here fertizler run off maybe a part of the cause?

That happens in alot of small lakes/ponds where I am. I just assume it's worse this year do to the lack of rain and increases warm weather we are having. In larger lakes I don't see it as much unless it's in a cove that gets little wind and alot of sun. I have caught some pretty good size largemouth from weed and Lillypad choked water with a scum frog and or 10" worm.

Thanks Tony. It just keeps getting worst every year by me. Almost impossible to fish by July...

I like to fish when the pond gets covered in green slime.A weightless texas rigged wormed , like a senko ,worked on top of the slop will slay the momma basses.

The fish don't mind.
Those little pellet like green bits (duck weed?) make shade for the bass...
Try a scum frog or buzz bait when the shadows are long.
Weedless worms in the slop.

I'm pretty sure the green water is from algae.
Look for inlets where fresh oxygenated water runs in, that can be a bonanza after a summer rain.
I've seen 20" bass in water so shallow their dorsal would break the surface, in feeder creek during conditions like you describe. They wouldn't hit a thing either lol

Thanks for the added info! I can find spots to still get some fish, but they get more limited as the summer starts. There was one stream that feed into a small lake that would hold a tons of Yellow Perch, Crappie and Bass, but it greens up in the early spring and there are no fish at all there! People use to see the fish piled in their and be amazed, but not since this early greening has occurred......
Ebbtide, I see you are from NYC. Did you every try Oakland lake in Queens? Is has been a can of green soup for months now....

ding ding! ;) works like a charm weightless lizards and frogs as well

Tom, haven't tried that one.
As long as there isn't a massive fish die off, they are still there.
It's a matter of finding where.
I'd check the corner of the lake where the wind blows all the flotsam and garbage.
Find a spot in that that has 18" of water or more, drop a heavy jig thru the junk, and you could very well be a happy guy.

The last two weekends I went to two of the lakes, both have run offs into the bay. We had several inches of rain in just a few days and it has got cold, so the lakes are clear again! I ended up getting over 60 panfish each day (83 one day ) and several bass and a couple pickeral.
I prefer the clear water! I did try the green slime, but I did not have much luck.....
