Pondering Micarta for a BK16

How grippy is the are the micarta scales for the BK16? Can't decide whether to stipple the zytel, get micarta, wait for TKC to come out with G10, or just do nothing at all and use it as is. At the very least, I will do the last option. Is the micarta worth the $$?

I've been wondering the same thing. Of course, I almost always make stuff myself - work the entire weekend and spend twice as much as it would cost just to buy something - but I went against my nature and have a set coming for (one of) my full size beckers from the exchange. I've held them before and they feel pretty good. Worth the $$? That depends on your calculus.

Yep. It's worth it. It's a totally different feeling knife with the micarta. Very grippy especially when wet and very comfortable. Quit pondering and Just order them. Haha. You will be glad that you did.

I love the micarta. In addition to being more grippy it's thicker. Wondering when the G10 tkc scales come out too....been waiting.

Another vote for micarta,

I don't have it on all my knives. But I have enough to swap around if need be.
I feel it adds to the functionality of the knife. Especially in cold wet contitions. The Grivory can be stippled, or textured to offer more traction. I prefer the micarta. Wood is another option that adds beauty.

I wish I could come up with a way to do a leather wrap like my KA-BAR,

I have one set for the tweeners and can swap between the 15 & 16 as needed. I also recommend stainless hardware.

Its still grippy when wet :D

Micarta is great I put it on as many as I can.

It's uncomfortable if you get a set that's too brick like (example: my Ontario Afghan), but if you do get a set like that you can sand it down to a non hand bleeding(y?) level. Of course I've heard the Becker factory micarta grips are quite curvy, so just get those.

I just got a 16 and was thinking micarta as well but I was thinking about putting a ranger band on it first.

Some guys paracord wrap the tweeners.

But I find on a working knife P-cord, (para, not primer) tends to get nasty quick. Maybe I'm just a hog. But my knives are always in blood, butter, flour, mud, tree sap, or other nasty stuff that deserves a good hosing. The micarta cleans up well. But so does the grivory.

Better option still, make your own! It's pretty easy and you can make it in color combinations you can't buy in stores.

You can sand it to be as grippy as you like. This is sanded to 220 grit but if I had sanded to 320 or 400 it would have been smoother to the touch.

This was meant to be a heavy user In foul weather so I made it rough textured.

My next set will be yellow and black with a smoother finish to show off the bright color contrast.
