Pondering whittlers, suggestions sought

Hello folks

It's been a while since I last posted, but a computer blowing up and real life conspired to keep me away. (I don't know if that's a good thing or not considering your all enablers here.:p)

Anyway, to the topic at hand.

While I haven't been able to post I have dropped in from time to time and had a little look around (dangerous, I know) and developed a hankering for a whittler pattern.

I have no experience with this pattern so I was thinking of trying out a rough rider to start with, I've had a couple of them before (rough riders that is) and I consider them to be very good value for the price. But I was wondering if there where any other brands/makes with knives at a similar quality & price point?

I'm looking for something between 3" & 3 1/2" long with a spear/drop point master blade and a coping blade as one of the secondaries, also the master blade needs to shorter than 3" preferably about 2 1/2" long.

I know these requirements are restrictive but as I live in the UK any knife needs to to have blade/s 3" or less to be legal for EDC.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: After the responses so far and some more homework on my part I think a 4" closed length seems more realistic however a sub 3" blade is still a most for it to be legal for EDC over here in the UK

The ONLY RR I wouldn't suggest as a good starter is their swell centre whittler, the back springs are wayyyy to thin.
I think they make heavier whittlers though. They make a BIG whittler called the Box car, It's a big heavy great knife. May exceed your laws though.

Regards

Robin

Boker Tree Brand makes a small whittler. I had one in red bone. It was a true whittler with both springs on the main blade. I doubt you'll find a whittler with a spear blade. This one is 3 1/2 long. The blade is most likely 3 inches.Around $50.00 US.

I don't know of one that meets your specifics but a couple I know of are close. See the Case humpback whittler which has a main spear/drop blade or the seahorse whittler which has a secondary coping blade. The humpback meets the size you're looking for. The seahorse is a little longer but the blades length would be fine. Price would be more than a couple rough riders but I think the knife/blades would be more durable.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys.

Pipeman:Thanks for the warning, I'll certainly stay away from the swell centre whittler.

navihawk: That Boker Tree Brand whittler is pretty close to what I'm looking for and I think I could live with a clip point, however I have seen a few spear/drop point blade whittlers on smoky mountain knife works so they are to be had. OT for a minute, your avatar wouldn't happen to be a young William Shatner in that old Twilight Zone episode with the gremlin would it?

glocktenman: Thanks for the input about the case knives though their a little bit above what I would like to spend. I have a couple of rough riders and I have no question about their durability, like others here have said before here I've found them to be very good quality for the price. They may not be heirloom pieces but for a user or work knife or even just seeing if a particular pattern works for you their more than good enough.

What do you guy's think of Frost Cutlery or Schrade brands?

This is now the only split spring whittler I own. Great Eastern Cutlery #33 Conductor whittler. The main is a clip blade, 2.5 inches long, with pen and coping secondary. It is 3.25 inches closed. It is a very well executed whittler and in my opinion is one of GEC's underrated patterns. I've seen both ebony and spring green jigged bone models on dealers sites recently.

I'm a UK forumite too, it's a great little inoffensive pocket knife to carry.

There are a couple choices out there for spear points on whittlers, but I think if you're going to actually be whittling you'll want the sharper tip on the clip point. Most Seahorse patterns have main blades that are too thick. I carried one for a long time and that annoyed me.

No, I don't think I'll be whittling much with it. I just like the look of it for a general pocket knife.

Check out the Canal Street Cannittler:

It is. His name was Bob Wilson in that episode. One of the best Twilight Zones.

Schrades are good.

I recommend the Böker Whittler, excellent fit & finish, good choice of handles too. Nice compact knife.

Consider also Queen Cutlery's No.48 Whittler in D2 very pretty knife indeed. Comes in bone or wood.

Thanks, Will
