by the way,,,what type of steel is that you are working with:confused:

The steel is from a Cold Steel Trailmaster blank Carbon V 5/16" thick.
I plan on going to grit 1200 with the satin finish.

I did have a beer with the dinner that night.

PS My wife was not impresed:eek: what is it with women:D

Cheers,

André

Looks good to me, like they said keep them pics comin man I like seein a blade come alive.

I will keep the pictures coming.
The handle will be made of Musk-Ox horn from Greenland. This is how it looks like.
Might do some slaps of Musk-Ox horn on a real Busse knife with some nice musaik pins:D :p

André

Man those are some beautiful stones in the first picture Andre! Looks like an Arkansas translucent, a white and the top one...a surgical black maybe, don't have a clue what the other one is with all the colors in it, dang thing almost looks like some type of marble or polished granite.

Looks as if the blank came sharpened and ground already! Very cool what you're doing there bro. Hmmmmmm....got me thinking....oh no, that's a dangerous thing for me to be doing!!! Sure is coming along nicely, eh?! Those slabs that you're thinking about putting on are freakin gorgeous! You going to attempt some file work on the spine also?

Where'd you get that beast of a blank from?

The stones are soft Arkensas (white stone) The damaskus style stone is a very fine natural stone: do not know what kind maybe black Arkensas.
The stone the blank is laying on is a rare pink translucent Arkensas stone, that stone is super fine but removes steel very well to.

The blade blank is from the old Cold steel stock from back when they made good knives, about 1990 or so. The blank is from Recon scout (Trailmaster cut down) and the profile grind was already done. I bought 6 old stock Cold Steel blanks on ebay for $50:D .

I do not know if I will do file worl on the knife??? sometimes simple and clean design is the way to go.
This knife I call Recon Steel Hart.

I will keep the pictures coming, thanks for the interest.

André

That musk ox looks very nice.

How are you planning to heat treat your steel?

I am assuming blanks like that are not heat treated until after the majority of the blade has been shaped.

Good point...since the shape of the knife hadn't been cut out yet and only the grind work was done, it's probably true that the knife hasn't been heat treated. Any cutting of the blank would change the heat treatment, so I imagine it hasn't been done yet. I know that Paul Bos accepts knives from makers to do heat treating. The Graham brothers use Bos to heat treat their custom work.

BTW, thanks for confirming the stones for me. Bro those stones appear to be huge! Can't imagine what Arkansas stones that size must have cost you!

But then maybe you got them at a great price too, $50 for 6 blanks...nice score!

The Blank was heat treated and there is a rockwell mark on the blade to.
3 of the 6 blanks was treated and rockwell marks is on the blade one of the blades had 55 writen on the blade so I guess that that is the rockwell that is was hardend to.

The two big Arkensas stones are huge 10"x3"x1" wery good for sharpening large blades. I love to shatpen knives and a hait popping edge makes me very happy.:D

It was very hard to work on the blank due to the fact that it was already hard. all the grinding was done on a large rotating water stone so that the stel would not heat up. more then 6 hours of work:D 5/16" steel is killing me those days:D lots of beer and drinks after work.

Thanks for the tip on the heat tr5eatment Poul Bos is king Ja? does work for Mick Strider and Duane.

Already heat treated...really great score! Good to hear you did the cutting the way you did, slow and painful but worth it! Sounds like you're putting a lot of effort and thought into this project. Good job, I'm sure the results will be well worth all the effort. If you ever need to unload one of those heat treated blanks, I'll be more than happy to take one off your hands. :D

Good luck with the rest of the work...can't wait to see the progress. Great thread you started here...Thanks!
