Poor mans surface grinder

love this idea, i have a coval surface grinder but it's currently in my former shop and I've kinda been at a stand still till i get it relocated, but i think I'm gonna try this idea, with my mill.

thanks for the brainstorm, and it's so simple.

What a great idea!
I can't believe the idea didn't hit me years ago. After using the fly cutter so many times, you would think putting on a flared cup would be a natural progression. DOH!
Thanks for posting this.

Wow...
Seeing all that grinding grit on your ways and other precision surfaces actually made me feel a little ill just now.

Folks, if you do this, be aware what you're doing to the machine. I wouldn't suggest this use on a mill you value.

I keep my grinders is a separate room from my mills and lathes. And the surface grinder in a different building with other things like a vibratory tumbler and plasma cutter and welders etc (big nasty mess makers that should be no where near valued equipment). Protect your investments!

This is my HF surface grinder using the HF milling machine that I have been using for a couple of years now with great accuracy. You get two machines for the price of one.

Hi,Looking at your pictures it looks just like my mini mill/lathe how big is that magnetic table.
I have a 8" X 12" sitting in the shed and I was wondering if it could be altered to suite the mini mill.

thanks Jim. I had been looking for those all week !!

I was talking about this idea this past weekend with my neighbor. What HF mill do you use it on ? ( model ).

I have an old Index model 55 mill in the shop that I might do this on.

I am not sure which model nor the measurements on my mag chuck. I will be able to answer these questions tomorrow when I go back to my shop.

I might add that my mill is a two speed and I run it at full speed for best results. The amount I take off with each pass varies with the material width and type.

This is not for everyone as I am sure I will get some negative feeback.

That is an awesome set up for a diy surface grinder! Like Nathan said it could be very hard on your ways, I'd make sure you vacuumed them out and cleaned it very well after each use. otherwise that Half a Thou will grow exponentially very quickly! just my .02 worth but I still love the idea!

Not on my Bridgeport! I don't use any abrasives over that or my metal lathe cuz I've got to maintain the accuracy of the ways! But it does give a different twist for a surface grinder....I still like the idea of a belt surface grinder and will probably build such a critter!

Maybe adding some dust extraction to the setup wouldn't hurt? Keeping the dust off the ways should be easy.

Will it shoot more abrasives at the ways if you feed from the left? Maybe feed from the right so it goes in your eyes instead of anything valuable. ;)

Precision and Harbor Freight are normally considered to be mutually exclusive terms:eek: I may try this once I get my hands on the Micro Mill that I am inheriting from my late uncle. I don't remember if it is a Taig or a Sherline. I hear tell that they are small, but more of a "precision tool" than the small Chinese mills. Any comments?

I have been using that set up for a while now but have never been able to find the higher grit cupped wheels. The carbide insert face mill has always left a better finish then the 80 grit cups.

Jim, thats a great idea but I have to admit, the first thing I thought about when seeing that was.......................

exactly what Nathan was thinking ;)

Hey, I've always said.............. "whatever works for ya", and Jim, you definately make some great looking stuff   So..............

;) :D

I ordered a couple of the cupped wheels. Already have a mag chuck. I will turn an couple adapters to chuck the wheels up. I have a Grizzly mill and although not that great I want to keep it fairly decent so I am going to make a "skirt" the goes around chuck and covers my bed.:)
