Well dang it.

I ordered a new silnylon tarp from Outdoor Equipment Supply. Then I ordered some amsteel line to tie it down with. I also ordered a set of trekking poles that I want to use to pitch the tarp (I guess I'll hike with them too. :D) It all arrived to today. Hurray! I can go out and play with my tarp this weekend.

I forgot stakes.

D'oh!

I could just run out to the hardware store and buy some el-cheapo stakes to play with for the weekend, but I hate buying stuff that I'm not going use in the long run. So I just ordered some MSR Groundhog stakes. They'll be here in a week.

sigh

I truly love OES tarps. He makes a quality product. I've owned 2 so far. The first one he made for me I lost :grumpy:

How'd you lose it? That would truly suck.

Actually, the tent that I used to camp and hike with for years and years has gone missing. No big loss -- it weighed 10 lbs and I'd be replacing it now anyway, but I do wonder in which of my many moves it got left behind.

Well, the MSR grounghog stakes are excellent. Every order I make with REI, I add a couple of stakes...I probably have two dozen:D They are by far the best stakes I've used in just about every condition and type of terrain. You'll really appreciate them,

You'll love the OES. I've had my Maccat Deluxe for a few years and love it to death.
Amsteel for the guylines? Nothing will break that! I use amsteel whoopie slings on my hammock.

I just sharpen dead sticks for pegs or tie to rocks/ trees on site, as I have a habit of losing pegs.

You could always go out anyway and whittle baton a few stakes!

Yeah, now that I actually have my hands on the amsteel, I'm not too sure about it. I bought 7/64 line and I'm finding that it's too slippery to hold a taut-line hitch. So now I'm looking into making loop splices for it (what some are now calling a whoopie sling, I believe).

I have a lot of attachment points on this tarp, so that's a lot of splices to make. Maybe it's just as well that I don't have the stakes yet.

This video is very interesting to me. He uses (what I think is) amsteel for guy-lines with spliced loops on either end. One end has a tensioner and then he uses a prusik knot to hold the guy-line to the tarp. In wet weather he uses the end of the guy-line that doesn't have the tensioner, and in fair weather he uses the tensioner end. Looks pretty flexible to me.

Interesting idea!

I use this stuff
http://stores.tttrailgear.com/-strse-18/No-Tangle-Guy-Line/Detail.bok

It's stiff cord, so doesn't tangle easily, is easy to tie and untie but can hold a knot well.
I'd personally save the amsteel for something where you need that strength rating, like hammock supports.

Please post some pics when you get your setup ready, interesting thread.

Out of curiosity, why save the amsteel? I mail-ordered it from Redden Marine at 0.20/ft. Including shipping and handling, it came in at just under $30 for 120 feet of the stuff. That's actually a slightly better price than the no-tangle guy-line that you pointed to.

I bought the amsteel in three colors (red, silver and yellow) so that I can see at a glance which rope is what length (think I need three different lengths of rope for the tarp setup).

I'll definitely post some pictures when I get this all figured out. Actually, I might post a video. :D

wow, that's a great price for amsteel.
I'm a bit of a weight/space weenie with cordage, it just seems to add bulk, so I personally go with the thinnest stuff I can.
I'm sure that amsteel guys plus the dyneema reinforced tieouts on the OES will make for a bombproof setup.
