Poorman's PSK knife

From what I understand it's a hacksaw blade that's been ground down to a knife edge, and the handle shaped to allow for very light slicing tasks and for use as a fire striker. I do believe it is a much cheaper alternative to most PSK knives.

That actually seems like a good idea to me. Could remove the teeth on the handle, drill some holes, and do a twine wrap, still pretty inexpensive. Maybe a good emergency, back up blade. Very light weight.

I used to visit that site a lot. I have since forgotten about it. There is some good info on it.

I'd use one as a backup blade in an emergency, as said.

the entire blade is hardened, not the best of cutting instruments, but better than nothing and you can get a good edge of one- they are definitely cheap :)

it does make a good firesteel striker

I keep one in my match safe (along w/ matches/tinder/small firesteel)

Keep in mind hacksaw blades are usually only hardened at the teeth, if I recall correctly.

True but you could change that with a propane torch since it is so thin. It would also be good to use to spare the edge of your good knife.

I've made a couple saw blade knives just fooling around. If you get a decent saw blade they don't come out to bad. I keep one hanging off my pack and another in my gear. They work pretty good for slicing and fine work.

For $2 you could do a whole lot better with a piece of O1:) Assuming you had the torch.

Not much reason not to make some of these for kits, but I also keep several blades on me anyway so I don't see much need. I got a hacksaw blade laying around that I cut a chunck off to make a firesteel striker for a bracelet so I guess I could whip up a few for the heck of it if I need a project. Not that I need another project.

There's also the upgraded version using reciprocating saw blades. I've been to that site a few times but I don't think he's updated in a while.
