Pop Top, can question

The pop-top cans are not for me. While ever more common they present a problem. These cans have top that is partially cut so a normal hand can open it by tearing the cut line .. Making the cut requires precision can making.A small error in making the cut makes for leaking can. I'd rather have a proper can which is less likely to leak.

Always open cans properly . Listen as the top is first opening. There should be " psst" sound .If not the vacuum has been compromised ! Discard the can as it might have nasty bacteria because of a leak.
Had a can yesterday that didn't say psst, out it went . Any can that looks or smells or tastes different should also be discarded !!

Pop top cans are not as good as the standard cans.
Proper handling of canned food !

Don't they have that in OHIO yet ??

In summary:

If a pop-top can doesn't make the "psst" sound the vacuum seal has probably been compromised and it should be discarded. Also discard any that look, taste, or smell funny.

So what's your question?

Really, from new york, and you're going to talk down to somebody because of where they are from.
We have them,(pop top cans), here, and the right to choose an extra large soda if we want, or regular cans, and guns without magazine limitations, shall issue Concealed Carry Permits, and non goofy knife laws.

Go new york,

I do agree with the "pssstt" thing tho, thanks.

I lived in OHIO for a few years and back then they didn't even know what iced coffee was ! and what's coffee ice cream ??
I've handled knives for a very long time and rarly ever get even a very small cut. But those pop tops are a real hazard ! Sharp as your best knife !!
Goofy knife laws in NY ? They are trying to pass a bill banning 'machetes ' . Never confuse NYC with NY state .

Pop tops are sharp, thats true.

And you know us hillbillies, lumping everybody into one big socialistic Democratic bubble, sorry for my confusion about nyc and new york state, we haven't got maps here yet.

What i try to do is read the directions, or at least try to dope out what they mean by looking at the pictures, and not chew the lids off anymore.

I've met some Ohio natives. Most weren't the biggest iced coffee fans, but they were literate enough for form legible sentences with correct punctuation which isn't something I can say for a certain ambassador of NY on this thread.

Thanks for the heads up. Is there a link ? :D
I started emptying cans for my woodwalks into MSR hard shell containers years ago. Zip Lok Freezer bags hold solid eats quite well and I can see me food as I take it out. I was very unpleasantly surprised by several compromised RTE MRE meals I had bought for a kayak trip. Every entree had a leak and all were spoiled. I started transferring my foodstuff to colapsible containers pretrip and that problem went away. Aesop's bread basket, Mule it in, Fly it out.

Why does this subforum exist anymore? The outdoor talk is all over bladeforums at large and in here we have this...I dunno...troll thread?

No troll here .Some of the younger generation has to be taught proper and safe handling of tools etc. A good project for someone , for You Tube , would be to butcher a deer with only poptop can lids !! I've seen that done with a flint tool which worked well.

There is no requirement to respond to every thread here. If one thinks it belongs in another subforum, click the report button and let the mods decide. As for myself, food safety is a survival skill. I am one who repackages most foods into serving sized ziplok bags when I can. But use packaged Mountain House or the like meals when the situation calls for it. It is easy to tell when the pouch vacuum has been compromised. I did give up on MREs, C-rats etc. long ago. Most on the market were well beyond their use-by dates. And even when fresh, weren't the best. As far as cans, mostly the potted meat, canned ham or chicken from the grocery store. Never any spoilage problems and small enough to not be a hassle packing out. Yes the lids can cut you like a knife.

Years ago went fishing, forgot my knife, (hasnt happened much, but it does happen) ended up using a lid top from a can of corn to cut line.
So, i think skinning wouldnt be to out of the question.

No need to get testy or insulting. Your post made not sense to me. Maybe reading and writing hasn't made it to NY yet? lol

Post your response with courtesy, please.
Teasing & trolling is out of place. Jeeze!

Don't poke this New Yorker,
Upstate or city, east coast or left coast,
Flyover, whatever -- post your snark and your politics elsewhere
Or else. Yeah.

Michael!
I'm right there with you. Zip Lok is the way to go. First off its quiet, nearly noiseless compared to a spoon in a can. Empties fold flat, weigh nothing. You can drop them in boiling water, heat and eat. I think the best feature is visibility. Looks awful most likely IS awful. I'm out alone on most of my excursions so a Mountain House FD might make too much. Extra grub goes in the bag, eat later. These are just my observations. But I am a big supporter of repackaging canned eats. If it was good Thursday night it's probably good on Sunday.
There's a little common sense to every meal plan. Tuna salad can kill. Mayo meals turn to ballistic gel casserole. Plan accordingly. At 8500 feet base food keeps longer just hanging from the tent top. But cutting across the OK panhandle in July means dry goods and boiling.
AND Ziplok float, MRE's, Beanie Weanies, uhm...not so much.

The Food Saver vacuum/ seal machines make re-packaging really easy and neat .Perishables frozen and packed properly are good for 24-36 hrs and cooked in boiling water. I even vacuum pack my dry clothes and fire starting gear when kayaking.--KV

I don't have any worries about those types of cans. As a matter of course I was taught to inspect all canned goods before opening and using. We've been using these cans for quite a while with no issues. I kind of recall when I got my first can of kippered herring with the 'pop top'. Sardines, peanuts, canned vegetables, etc. They are all good. I do admit that they will not take the same abuse that a solid can will, but just be a little more careful with them.
