From some pictures I have seen, I'm guessing that "popcorn" stag is a term meaning lots of bark of a small bumpy nature. Does that sound about right?

And all this time I thought popcorn stag was a get together where single people made popcorn and socialized.

Could this be like eating popcorn at a stag movie. I bet nobody wants to see "little" bumpy people in the movie.

Good "popcorn" stag is just as you surmised. :)

Is there a potato chip stag?

No,but there is a Potentate's Stag held every year and we cavort, drink camel's milk, eat great food and generally have a good time.tom.

Back to the original post.Yes ,that is the correct term for deeply grooved and drippy looking stag.I used to have a nice German camper with just that.tom.

Would this qualify as "popcorn" stag?

Ari, of the three pics you posted, I would only classify the last pic as "Popcornish". The other two will just have to be satisfied with being awesome looking. :)

"Popcorn" stag comes from the section near the base of the antler. Not all antlers will have the "popcorn" effect.

some species of deer do not produce that effect, but other european deer variety will have VERY exaggerated "popcorn" effect over a substantial amount of the horn. A friend has a very old german knife with what I'd call the perfect piece of popcorn stag horn, it was popular to use on german hunting blades.

It used to be something that I threw back into the box when stag was readily available. Even now I have trouble using it on a customer ordered knife for fear that the customer will reject the finished product.
