I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right place or not. Does anyone know of a source for 3"/3" or 4"/4" poplar. Would be used for whittle/carving purposes. Have not been able to locate any this large. Thanks

The family business is cabinet making and home building. We buy poplar, ashe, maple, and oak by the truck load. I can see if any of our sources have any in that size in stock, and what kind of price you would be looking at with our discount. Just let me know.

You might also want to take a look at basswood, it's supposed to carve quite well.

Yeah Basswood is good stuff. I like it really well for freestanding carvings, and whittling type projects. Poplar is harder and can be kind of stringy depending on the peice and how much heartwood vs sapwood is in the peice. I like it for chip carving though, and the cool thing is its available in bigger peices/boards. Its good for building things like clocks or furniture that you want to add carvings too.

I was away from the forum yesterday and hadn't read any of the posts that were made yesterday and today until now.
I have used some 2/2 poplar that I bought from Lowes. I like to use it, but would rather have a larger piece for some projects. The kind of stuff I do is, I guess called figurenes. Owl, and Eagle heads and some of the neck. Also Cobras where the hood is flared. There are some other things that I have done also. Right now I am working on a "Crying Eagle", the one that was derived after 9/11, using a 4/4 piece of basswood. The thing I don't like about basswood, is that when you try to cut in the direction of the grain, it will spliter out very easily. I used to do some whittling/carving many years ago and have just recently got started back, the last 3 months or so, doing some during bad weather days and at night. Tendonitis/arthritis in my hands is making it rough on me though.
Someone asked where I live, I am in south central Texas, on the gulf coast, approx. halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi. Thank you guys for the answers and suggestions.
Jeremy, you have mail coming. Thanks again everyone.
By the way, I meant to ask, is there anyone here that can tell me what "tupelo" wood is? Seems a little pricey.
