I recently rediscovered this 12 volume set from the 1950s or 60s. Not everything in them is relevant to knife making, but there is a whole wealth of information including 2 knife making articles (one with pictures from W.D. Randall,) numerous sets of plans for shop jigs, furniture and tools, some information on heat treating and at least 3 sets of grinder/sander plans. I picked mine up, minus Volume 4, at a flea market.

Michael,
I'm quite a collector of old books like these. Last year my daughter gave me a complete 1956 edition set for Christmas. I have read them so many time. A true wealth of information.
And, no, I don't want to get rid of my volume 4.

When I was a kid, my dad gave me 3-4 years worth of Popular Mecanics 1949-1953. The article with Randall was the thing that got me started.
I got it on my website(in danish though but good pictures): here is the article

I also got the Do It Yourself Encyclopedias. They are great reading.

My grandmother has my grandfathers 1956 edition which I just discovered on my last visit. It said about using some sort of hacksaw blade for the blade, I was just wondering if it was a special machine shop blade.
