Thursday I did a complete system restore on my computer and have only been to a few websites that I know should be free of problems. An hour ago while browsing Gunforums I got some popups which is not mormal then just 2 minutes ago I got more popups while browsing Here at Bladeforums.

Have popup advertisements been added to the forums?

Thanks,

Heber

No, we have no popup ads here. Your computer has acquired an infection. Ken Collucci will be along shortly to help you get rid of it; he's good at that.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy, or Ad-Aware, or both. They're free downloads and a quick google search will find them. Run those to get rid of the spyware. Also, stop using Internet Explorer and download Firefox to use as a browser (also free). Install the Adblock extension. If you use Firefox with adblock, and run Spybot and Ad-Aware regularly (and keep them updated) you will never see another popup ad again.

My computer tech turned my system restore function off. He said that it should not be used because it is a way of getting viruses.

He explained that system restore turns back the time and date of your computer including your virus protection programs. When that happens your antivirus will be turned back to the date and time of the system restore making the computer vulnerable to infection because it has been back dated to an earlier version of the antivirus.

Thanks for the info TJ I downloaded Spybot and it works great.

Get Ad-Aware as well. I run both, and each always finds something the other missed. Between them, they do a good job.

First....

What browser are you using?

IE6 has a pop-up blocker you can use. Not the best but it works.

Follow this info and get back to me.

1. Download Adaware SE Personal Edition and update.
www.lavasoft.de

2. Download Spybot S&D and update. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

3. Download HijackThis and update. http://s89223352.onlinehome.us/mirror/hjt/
(When you run this just do a scan, save the log to a word file and send me the file so I can see what files you need to remove. This is tricky for someone without some spyware savy.)

4. Download, update, and run CWShredder.
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

5. Download, install and update CCleaner. Run the Cleaner and then run Issues and back up befor eyou fix them.
I made a folder in My Docs called CCLeaner in case you need to reinstall the log. http://www.ccleaner.com

Install and run these programs. I would recommend turning off System Restore prior to running these programs. I also suggest running them in Safe Mode.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Thanks guys! good to know it's not this site giving me fits. I have Ad-aware and it hasn't found anything yet. I installed the latest Opera web browser on this computer and made it the default browser. Have not had any popups since I installed it.

By the way, I would get one to two popups before running any programs. IE would just start spitting out ads. That stopped after I went to Opera. Been using it on my laptop for over a year and love it! Finally put it on my desktop.
