I'm getting ready to spend a week with my wife's family and would love to bring my forge and anvil and do some forging. Problem: I've got to fit all my forging stuff, all our vacation stuff, the puppy, and us in my camry......
My 24"x24" stacked wood stand is just too big So I'm going to build something this weekend probably out of wood (cause I didn't get to the junkyard in time to get cheap angle iron).
I'd like to make it so I can break it down for transport. Anybody done something like this? I'd love to see pics if you have. Any suggestions/advice would be appreicated.
Thanks,
Ed

Take a look at the stands in this anvilfire link. The stand in figure 22 could probably be adapted to make it easy to disassembled.

Use 2X4 pine boards.Build up layers by cross stacking them.I glue the layers and screw them, too.Leave two long boards on the top layer. They make a hammer rack as well as carrying handles for moving the base. The anvil sits in a footing of wood to make a snug fit. I think this photo shows it fairly good.Photos are here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401082

ed if you can get barrel ..one of those blue plastic ones, cut it down to the height you want you can fill it with a good packing sand and set your anvil in it
if cleaned out with a trash bag in it it could be used as a tote also :)

I like the sand in the barrel idea, but I think you guys are missing something. He needs a Portable anvil stand. One that comes apart so he can fit it into his car.

Ed, I think your best bet is to stay at home and forge knives all week while your wife visits her family. :D

the back seat  :D one or two kids might fit in it too.. :D

The anvil, stand, forge, forge cart, tanks and all supplies (I stick the hammers and tongs in the empty slack bucket for transport) fit easily in the back of my voyager (along with all the other crap that is always there). The stand only weighs about 50 pounds and would fit in the trunk of most cars, the back seat for sure.If a fold up stand is needed ,there are good Farrier's units available from Centaur Forge Supply.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'm leaning on forging all week before I leave to get it out of my system. Lots less work that way. Even with a take down stand, I've still got the 96 lb anvil, forge, propane tank, bucket of hammers/tongs/etc, a table to put the forge on..... Its pretty tight in a camry when you include a week's worth of vacation stuff, the dog, bikes etc....
I am going to incorperate some of Stacy's tool holder boards on my exhisting anvil stands. They lok like his except no place to put tools...
Thanks again for the input.
