Hey I am looking for a portable cooking solution, something small that can go in a backpack.
Never had anything like this but am opem to suggestions. Also has to be budgety as im quite tight.

I really like my Super Cat alcohol stove. Cost=1$, weigh next to nothing, boils a cup of water in 4.5 minutes, and the denatured spirit it uses is very cheap. The drawback is you can't really cook fancy stuff; it's either ON full heat or OFF. This is a non issue for me since I'm usually only boiling water on the trail; if I have to cook meat or else, I'll make a fire. YMMV.

Looks very nice but where do i get it ? The link doesnt show a buying option or am i wrong ? Its just that i am on a mobile phone.

I rather like the Optimus Crux Lite stove. Had mine for almost 2 years now and it's still going strong. Pair it with a Terra Solo or Terra Weekend cook set and you are good to go.

Got the Terra Solo cook set to go with my stove. Am thinking about buying another Crux Lite stove and a Terra Weekend cookset. The weekend would go in my large backpack and the solo would go in my day bag.

I have a Vargo alcohol stove that could fit in my pocket. For a backpack check out the MSR and Snow Peak offerings. They require a small canister of pressurized fuel. How many will you be cooking for?

You make it yourself out of a cat food can.

Consider yourself warned: once you make your first one the urge to tinker with other designs is strong indeed. I probably have 10 of these homemade stoves on a shelf in my basement and no two are quite the same.

MSR Dragonfly. A bit pricey (my last one a few years back cost about $125 if I recall correctly), but it can go from a pilot light to a jet engine and it uses almost any liquid fuel. Why, I think it will even burn piss if need be.

Esbit stoves are cheap and work pretty well. Tea lights can make good alcohol stoves too. Check out some of the youtube vids on ultralight alcohol stoves. I like to use an MSR Pocket Rocket though. Not too expensive for what it is and it gets water boiling faster than solid fuel or alcohol but you have to carry fuel cans.

How about a little bit more information on what you are going to do with it?
You said you wanted one to fit in a backpack. Is this for day trips? Multi-day trips? If you want a budget stove for just boiling water, search "penny stove" or "pop can stove". You can make a stove with an empty pop/beer can and a buck will buy you enough fuel to last quite a while. There is a blog that is something like Jason Klaus Gerartalk, there is a lot of info on alcohol stoves there.

+1 on the Super Cat homemade stove. They are super easy to make with a paper punch. If budget isn't that tight then the Snow Peak is great, so is the Optimus and PocketRocket.

Just a trick to boil water without a stove. Fill the empty plastic soda bottle with clean water, throw it directly into an open fire, watch closely, as soon as water starts boling remove the bottle from the fire using a stick. If done properly the bottle won't melt.

And the best part of this is that you "have" to empty out the Heineken cans first.:D

Hells yeah! Good excuse if you want to get plastered. Tell the wife you're trying to be self sufficient and build something that may save you in an emergency outage but you just can't seem to get it right, or you're building in some redundancy by making several. You can blow through a case in no time!

I don't like the taste of canned beer though. Bottle all the way for me.
