Does anyone have any experience with the 200 to 300 dollar harness testers on the big river website? I can't afford to fork out several thousand for one. I want to get a ball park on different blade hardness. I already have the harness files

If you meant harDness, this is my answer:
They work. But a few things to consider. Steel has to be flat sanded min with 400 grit. And get some lube to stick it to the weight (included in the case) so it works correctly, as the knife itself doesn't have enough mass for the tester.

My personal opinion is you would be better off with one of the Ames portable clones
They are in the 700 range but work well.

I was able to pick up a used tester on FB marketplace. Some are complete, some aren't and need weights, anvils, indenters and some instructions how to adjust/dial them in.
