I asked my sister for one of her compacts when she was done with it, and now I have a nice, small mirror. My only question is, what can I do with the bit of dead space inside? Should I just cut off the mirror side and use it that way?

I used one for a while, and removed the other half. That other half does protect the mirror from scratches though. I used mine to shine sunlight into holes and crevices looking for snakes. I now have a good quality signal mirror that is much brighter, and much easier to use as a signal mirror than the compact mirror.

I carry a 3X5 unbreakable mirror in my uniform shirt pocket for clearing rooms at work. Forget it is there until I need it.

That's what I did, but you will trade compactness for better performance in doing so.

The other factor to think about is the shatter factor.

A lot of the signal mirrors on the market are made from non-glass materials, and therefore will be a lot less likely to shatter. The compact mirror is probably glass. May not be bad to keep in the glovebox JIC, but the non-glass would be better for field use, IMHO.

(honestly I used the same type mirror until it broke during a tumble down a hill. Luckily it was in something that protected me from the slice-cut action glass is sooo well known for...)
