Portable pry bar

I'm putting together a grab bag with what I think would be essential gear to carry in a emergency situation - I guess people call it the "bail out bag". Well, I was thinking and a small pry bar seems to be a good idea to have handy, since I'm only planning to carry a small knife and one or two folders that definitively could not be used as pry bars.

From the pics I've seen so far the Widgy Pry Bar (the big one) appears to have a good compromise between size and function. The smaller ones, specially the Pico, look to be too small to be effective for anything else then removing staples or opening boxes. And of course, you can't beat the price (though so far I haven't found someone who will ship one here to Brazil :().

On eBay I did find a small Ti pry bar, just a tad bigger then the Widgy, but costing basically 5x more . Besides, one end was bulkier with some sort of hammer that I think would take too much room, therefor wont work for me.

Besides the Widgy, can anyone recommend another similar and portable pry bar? And of course, that I can get shipped down here ;)?

There are some great knife makers in your part of the world. I bet one of them could hammer out exactly what you want for a good price. You also might check into a blacksmith that shoes horses for another option. I would definitely look local before you have something shipped into Brazil.

Sid, that's a good idea! If I can't find anything online readily available, I guess having one made locally to my specifications would be my next best option .

I know in the US big retail stores like walmart and target sell a stanley prybar that works pretty well. It is also a good size to keep in a pack.

The ones I've seen around here, even the brake tools, were too hefty and heavy. Weight is a concern, I want it to be as light as possible. The screw driver idea sounds good, but again, I would have to use a big screw driver for it to withstand abuse, and there goes the portability.

The Gerber Artifact is 3.5 inches closed and has a pry bar, screwdrivers, and a hobby knife blade. I've only seen them online. They cost $10. Anybody know if they are big enough for any practical use? I'm thinking about getting one.

I think it's on the small size in terms of practicality.

Yep, something like that, with a length from 100 t0 120 mm and that I can wrap with paracord for a better grip. What's the big one?

Those are coutycomm pry bars if I'm not mistaken, the larger one is a handy tool indeed.

If you're really swish you have one of these bad boys though :thumbup:

I am interested in one of these bars, specifically the larger one that hatchetjack posted. However, how effective are they, really? They are awful small.

This is the one I saw on eBay:

It's the Stiletto Mini FlatBar (5.25"). A bit bigger then the Pocket Widgy (at 4"), and being made of Ti, I'm sure it's lighter. But the "L" end, though I know is great to use when you need more leverage, makes it a lot more bulkier then the Widgy. And of course, there's also the price: $59,99 (found on the bay for $58 IIRC) against $5,95 for the Widgy at the Survival Shop.

Now the big question: is it worth it paying basically 10x more for the Ti tool?
What do you think?

And what's the notch on the lower end for, a bottle opener? The site doesn't explain it.

I have this tendency to always want the best equipment possible, and many times I end up overspending on something that I could have bought a cheaper version of but as equally effective for my needs

LUW--- Are Stiletto tools worth the extra money?? You have to decide that. :) Did you ask STR, here on BF, if he would make you a pry-bar?

My dear arachnid friend, there's the problem, I have NO idea or experience with such a Ti tool ;). If you guys tell me it's worth it because of the overall weight savings and quality of the tool, then more then probably that's the one I'll get.

I wasn't aware that STR could make one. If he could make something like the widgy bar but with 5" I think it would be perfect.

LUW---My good man, ask STR if he would make you one. If Steve can't, go Stiletto. I love mine. ;)
