Hi all! I'm hoping I don't look silly when asking this. My husband's grandpa made knives and passed away this past year. We moved into his house and Im thinking I found a homemade forge but I'm not sure. It's made in a tank only a little more than half way filled up and what looks like a pipe sticking out, but all the ones I'm seeing online have an additional opening on the side for a torch and this does not. What do you all think? If it is a forge how do you use it without the other opening? Thanks in advance!

looks like it could be the start of a forge, not a fully formed one though... It might be something else though.

Yeah definitely PVC, you can see the writing on the side on the first pic. I wonder if it was the start of a cast refractory forge. Although the chamber would be REALLY small...

I didn't open the photo fully. Yes, that appears to be PVC. Not sure what the builder was trying to do, but I agree that it isn't worth using as-is. The shell could be salvaged, but the PVC makes no sense.

I don t think that plan was to keep that PVC inside , that is only to make that round chamber inside .Judging by the pictures, when he takes out the PVC forge will have a usable chamber for forging ?

I suspect that it's concrete, not refractory. It also looks like someone tried to hammer out the pipe and failed. Even well greased, PVC doesn't make a good insert for casting. It might be able to be pressed out with a 20-ton press, maybe. Removing the concrete inside will be pretty difficult, as well. An air-hammer would probably be needed. Get those two tasks accomplished, and it should be simple to start from there
