Possible issue with my Queen; Maybe not?

Hey guys,

I've recently started collecting more traditional folders, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I just got a Queen Mountain Man. Bought it brand new. I like everything about the knife, and I will mention that I got this one as kind of a heavy duty knife that I plan on using the hell out of. So with my possible issue, please keep that in mind.

This issue is, at the butt end of the knife, the brass liner on the left side is partially separated from the bottom of the back spring. Please see the pics below. My question is, will this eventually effect the functionality of the knife? Could it turn into a problem later on? Further separation, etc? It doesn't really bother me aesthetically too much, but if it's a possible functionality problem I need to exchange it.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Functionally, I wouldn't worry at all. Essentially no moving parts related to the knife's function at the butt end of that pattern (no pivot that might loosen up or get clogged with gritty debris, in other words). Aesthetically, if the knife is brand new, I'd bet Queen would still be willing to make that right for you, if you don't like the looks of it. A decent dealer (depending on from whom you bought it) should also be willing to exchange it with a cleaner-built knife for you.

That shouldn't affect the function of the knife at all, just a matter of how much it bothers you. Most likely they didn't spin the ferrule enough to close up the back, or there might be a piece of material (such as a sheared piece of ferrule), that's preventing it from closing any further.

I think if you're planning it as a user you won't have any issues. But, if it's bothering you, I'm sure Queen would fix you up.

Am I seeing things or is there something stuck between the liner and the backspring just where the gap starts to close (like a piece of brass or steel)? If it's a piece of residue you might be able to get it out and slowly clamp and glue the scale but to be honest, It would bug me and I'd likely send it back.

Regards

Robin

Awesome. Thanks for the info, guys. I haven't used it yet, so I might just send it back for a different one. I got it from Knives Ship Free and I know their CS is outstanding.

I've heard the same; don't think you'll have any worries with them. Good luck.

They will take care of you for sure. In the future if you call & ask them to look the knife over before they ship they will do that as well.

Swap it for a better one ... the slipjoint mountain man is a magnificent and useful piece :) Soon as I discovered it, I bought another in case I lost the first one, as I knew I'd be taking it out a lot

I'm generally not very picky about minor fit and finish issues, but I'd send that one back to the dealer or to Queen for repair or replacement.

I agree with Robin, I think there is something stuck in there preventing the two faces from mating properly

towards the bottom left

You can carefully stick a thin blade in there, with the edge facing the pin, and try and pry the object out using the spine. Once that is done, you can peen the bottom pin until it closes up. Only if you are comfortable doing that, of course.

There's no butt pin on the mountain man as far as I know. The ferrule is spun to hold the butt together. If you try squeezing that together in a vise or what not, you'll likely wind up cracking the covers, best to let Queen take care of it.

I'm with the others. Send it back to the dealer for a new one. Derrick will take care of you. No point attempting to fix it yourself.

Thats a gap.
I could park a fire engine in there.
It IS bothering you isn't it?
It bothers me .
Send it back.
I have one that is perfect so why shouldn't you?

Yep--either send it back to us and we'll replace it or to Queen and they will fix it. I wouldn't be very happy with that kind of gap. (although, like others have said, it really won't matter in function.

As to perfect, that is unlikely....I am happy to check it over for you, but perfect is a tough order.

Also, when you send it back, put a note with it and we'll put a store credit up to $6 to cover your shipping back to us or to Queen. :)

OK maybe its not perfect but it is a beautiful, functional, well made, traditional knife with snappy w&t...heey just a sec that is close to perfection.
