Check out the "titanium spade" at www.uscav.com . The length(stated at 26 inches) is short enough to allow for lashing to your backpack but long enough for a useful shovel/tool. Being titanium, it is strong and lightweight, and won't add much to your load. But the shape should suggest another use to you edged enthusiasts.
The size and shape look very similar to Cold Steel's "Assegai". I have always wanted one, but could never justify the expenditure. Now It seems to me if there are titanium bladed knives out there, why couldn't this be sharpened ? I will grant those knives have a diferent alloy, but a serviceable edge should be possible, even if it doesn't last as long. Now I can have a digging tool and the short lance I dreamed about as a kid. And the local constabulary wouldn't bust a person for carrying a spade on them, but an assegai is a different matter. So check it out and let me know what you think.
