Came up with a new design for a 7.5" tactical/survival knife, which will be wrapped in paracord. My inspiration came from a bear grylls gerber knife.

heres a few pics: (the areas in silver are the edge) ignore the other stray black lines, thats where i messed up.

A comparison to my hunting knife:

can't decide on what steel to use, any suggestions? Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Since this has 100 views and no responses I will "be that guy". Personally I think the knife is too fat. It will be very large in the hand and not very ergonomic. The tang cut outs with sharp corners will be stress risers and weak spots. Spend some time holding it and I will bet you find that it's not comfortable. Lastly the "edge" you have drawn on seems impractical. I assume by edge you mean bevels so having part of the belly dull and useless seems more like a negative than a positive. I would make a simple fixed blade with a normal flat grind in 1084 before doing anything else. I don't mean to discourage, just to give you feedback from a knife user and a knifemaker. Also this topic would fit a lot better in shop talk than here I think.

Thanks. Now that I have taken a good look at it, it does seem too "fat". It needs to be ergonomic, but the concept is there, it just needs to be simplified. Looks like its back to the drawing board for me! Thanks for the advice, going with 1084 sounds good to me.

What exactly is the concept?

What problem are you fixing with this design?

i dont see the ability of either tatical or survival here
in my opinion needs more point and less of a tanto edge, if its survival id suggest it be a little longer in the blade

Hey bud... that looks a lot like one of the first knives I tried to make, I failed miserably because I didn't know my limits. Go ahead and try that knife! Whats the worst that can happen?

I think you're finding inspiration in the wrong places. The Gerber/Bear Grylls thing is about money, nothing more.

It's important to start somewhere. This is a good start.

Consider making something like this and using it for what you envision the intended purposes are. That way you'll know what you like, and what should change on the next one. Don't know of anyone that made the ideal knife the first time - I know my own were heavy, and thick, and had poorly shaped handles, and fit into a category that I now deem unsatisfactory for a knife! Making a few, using them, having other makers offer observations... that's how I improved. I'm still struggling with how, but each one seems to get better!

One word of caution - the most scathing critics can be the most beneficial. Try to get past the personalities and seek the meaning of their point.
