Possible Purchase of Desert Camp Tramp

I need a fixed blade knife for outdoor use. I have done some research and narrowed the field to the Desert Camp Tramp and the Becker Knife and Tool BK7. I can not as of yet make a decision, but I hoped that you could assist me in my decision making by bringing to my attention the benifits of the Camp Tramp over the HK7. Thanks in advance.

Hey Wasz,
They're both very good knives. For me, the Camp Tramp is balanced better for the size knife it is--heavily out front to give it good momentum in chopping/limbing and snap cuts. The Becker is a lighter knife and more centrally balanced, and while this has merit for a knife that could potentially see use as a fighter, it somewhat limits its effectiveness on big-knife type chores. The other major point is the handle; the Swamp Rat handles are a more comfortable size/shape for many people. I have big hands, and the Becker handles feel good to me, but a number of my friends who've tried them don't like how large they are. Plus, the full-surrounding resiprine-c gives protection from vibration (if you are chopping or batoning the blade) and heat/cold from the tang in inclement conditions.

Those are the main advantages I can think of. :)

Wasz,
Welcome to the Swamp Rat Forum, I'm glad you stopped by. I'm sure more Rat's will be along soon to give you some input. I'm sure they will be helpful.

Funny you should mention this. Just today, i sold a NIB BK7, and also ordered a Camp Tramp and a Bandicoot. After doing some research of my own, it seemed that the Beckers tended to be a bit brittle, however it did seem to be a good knife. After researching Swamp Rat Knives, viewing the FAQ sticky thread, and seeing the SRKW no BS gaurantee, i was pretty much convinced to buy a Swamp Rat. Just my $.02 hope it helps.

I was going through the same debate as you a couple of weeks ago. I ended up ordering 2 knives, the battle rat and the howler.

But if you're just thinking about purchasing 1 knife, the camp tramp the way to go. Going with the becker now may see like you are saving money, but in the long run swamp rat is the way to go because of the great waranty.

If you're thinking about a swamprat now but for some reason decided to go with the becker, sooner or later you'll end up purchasing a swamp rat anyways.

I placed my order for a desert camp tramp thursday morning. Thanks for all the input, it helped a lot. I guess ill have to frequent the swamp rat forum now :)

Good Choice:

I have a CampTramp and have been completely won over. Great ergonomics. Surprised no one mentioned superior heat treat as another advantage. The CT is differentially hardened with a slightly softer spine and improved toughness over the excellent but overmatched Becker.

I do have a Becker necker and can say that Becker gives a lot of value but SRKW is a step up quality wise.
