Possible Real Life Survival Situation

An ice storm is upon us here in Oklahoma. Entire state is under a State of Emergency. We weathered a really horrible one back in 2007 and this one is expected to be about as bad. So, the wife's survival instinct kicked in (bout damn time...although she calls it a "comfort response") and she stocked up on all the necessities. Be careful out there you all... if you dont have to go to work dont. If (heaven forbid) something happens use what you have learned here. This could present a real life survival situation for all of us if we aren't careful. Use common sense if you have to be on the road and remember that no one else is using it. Keep your BOB stocked and plenty of water and food available...we might be in for a ride here.

God Bless and Stay Safe My Fellow Okies

Stay safe, ice storms are the worst. Your lucky, my wife's "comfort response" has not kicked in yet.

Ive been trying to get her "on board" for 4 years now....

Yours will come around...just takes some time and jedi mind tricks :D (ie...it isnt a survival instinct...but a comfort response,,,thatll help the process)

Stay safe man, hope its not as bad as they say.
My wifes idea of comfort response is
makin sure there is plenty of
Ben and Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch
and making sure the netflix account is paid up.

Stay safe!

We had a good one here last winter. No power for a week and temps in the teens. The main need as I saw it was a source of heat to keep the family warm and pipes from freezing.

We don't have a wood stove hooked up so I used two kerosene heaters. I recommend starting them outside as well as shutting them down outside, it greatly reduces the smell.

All of our chilled perishable food went out in the snow.

LED flashlights and oil lanterns came in handy as well.

Watch out for falling branches and power lines, I could hear trees crashing down all night (very eerie) and we had power lines down everywhere.

Tarps are good to have for roof damage.
Good luck.

Indeed this storm might turn out to be a whopper, and I've got driving to do this morning. taking blankets, water, snacks, extra diapers (driving with my girls) a fresh can of snus and a book.

Where are you in OKC Chad aka theedge13 ?

this is the best kind I have found for shoveling
chops the ice and really gets down to the sidewalk.
I have an old one which has a shorter handle in the van.

Hang tough Bro. Up here in North Dakota we have to stock up in late Sept and be ready for blizzards and such until late May.:grumpy:

You and the family stay safe out there Bro !! Hope the weather passes quickly and without too much damage ...:)

Good luck. Stay safe and may God protect you and your family and everyone on the storms path.

A friend in Lubbock, Texas just emailed me that it is hitting them there now. It is due here in SW Tennessee tonight before midnight, continuing thru Friday night.

I have no doubt my power will go down. I have plenty of oil lamps, candle lanterns and such for light, and I learned already this winter to close down the rest of my house and sleep in the living room in my recliner in a sleeping bag.

I'm going now to get a few groceries and if I run across a kerosene heater at an affordable price I'll get one.

Man, I used to go to that Hooters every weekend, it really killed me when they tore the old one down and replaced it with a new fangled shiny place.

My last job I worked down on 127th and pole, I live on Tinker.

The windows facing the wind are starting to look like privacy glass.

Hope all is well for you. Let me also give you an idea. Last year a pretty rough ice storm hit KY, a pretty savvy fellow ( now known as the generator man) went out a couple of days before and bought every generator he could find. Then the day after he drove around and sold them at a tidy profit. In fact he was making so much off them he hooked them up to people's houses for free. From what I understand he bought a hundred or so and pretty much sold them at 10 x what he paid for them.

No power for 5 days a few years back. A lot of people say a lot of bad things about Walmart but I got a 1200 watt generator for 175 bucks in the middle of crisis because they shipped extra from near by stores not effected by the ice. It was on shelf still cold and I jumped on that thing and carried it with me like a teddy bear.. Anyway I run it every month and it will run my furnace, sump pump and fridge just not my water pump. Oh yeah my Sat Tv works fine. 5 gallons of water, a propane cylinder on the camper (love the stove and oven in the camper). The only hard part is no high speed :)

Long term food is rice, pasta, flour and our yearly canning from the garden.

Ice under snow covered with ice. I still have power for now, but it is 24 degrees (that is -4 Canadian) and expected to go to 8 degrees (-13 Canadian) tonight. It is 38 in my bedroom now. I ain't sleeping in there.

Crazy here. My hometown (Marlow) looks like a warzone. Trees exploded and powerlines shattered. Crazy....i got to come back to work today (yeah me) and it was still pretty slick. I drove w/ 4 wheel drive on the entire trip. Hope all of the rest of you are doing ok
