I see this gorgeous " handmade " forge welded hammer folded damascus bowie on amazon but there are no reviews. its a 110.00 and is made from 1095 and 15N20

I dont want to get taken on a junk knife. I was originally trying to decide between a ka bar bk9 and a ontario RTAK II or a couple other production knives till I ran across this absolutely beautiful knife.

what do you guys think ? you can mouse over the main image for closeup.

sorry the link hadnt posted . this is the knife. http://www.amazon.com/Massive-Custom-Damascus-Hunting-Bk-8484/dp/B00BV24KTS/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t

Short answer to that question --> No!

The only way to tell quality damascus is to test it. Use it.

I will NEVER buy "cheap, absolutely handforged & handmade knife", because those are ususally made from crappy materials.

Actually, I buy damascus knives from people I know, or people who I know have a good reputation.

Life is too short for crappy damascus!

Kind regards,

Jos

anything in that price range you're looking is pakistani made out of rusty bumpers and scrap steel.
typically hardness ranges in the 30-40hrc so yeah, you'll only be looking at it cause you won't be cutting much with it

Quality is relative. If all you want is pretty, than you may be able to tell from pictures. If you plan on using the blade, the best indicator of quality is the reputation of the damascus maker. That's one of the reasons people get certification in the ABS Smith program.

I figured it was probably too good to be true . Id have expected a damascus that looks that nice to be atleast 2-300 bucks. I did request the smiths info for kicks to see who exactly is forging it . but if this is some pakistani junk made from bumpers and corregated steel I doubt they will have that info .

Sure does look nice though doesnt it ? the file work on the tang and the handle ??

The sheath is definitely second rate. If you look at it the stitching is all off which means the sewing machine is in dire need of a adjustment or work, the stamp on it is off canter as well, oh and the snap is set off to the side of the strap. All these things point to crappy workmanship.

Now I am not saying a handmade sheath is gonna be perfect. You have various levels of craftsmanship as far as that goes but even the guys on this forum only doing a occasional sheath I have scene turn out much sturdier, better looking sheaths.
